Classical Wrapped V-Belts

Classical wrapped V-belts are the workhorse of industrial power transmission. The trapezoidal cross-section wedges into matching sheave grooves, and the fabric wrap protects the cord and rubber body from abrasion, oil and heat. They are the most widely used belt profile for pumps, fans, compressors and general machine drives.

Section letter sets the cross-section width: A (and 4L) is the smallest industrial size, stepping up through B/5L, C, D and the heavy E section. The 3L, 4L and 5L FHP (fractional horsepower) sections cover lighter lawn, garden and light-industrial drives.

Construction

Our standard classical belts use a polyester tensile cord set in an oil- and heat-resistant synthetic rubber body, finished with a wrapped fabric cover. Polyester cord holds tension and resists stretch, so drives stay tensioned longer between adjustments.

Wrapped construction is the right default for most drives. Where a drive runs on tight sheaves, demands higher flex life, or runs hot, a raw-edge cogged belt is the better choice — see our cogged (raw-edge) V-belts. For multi-groove drives subject to shock or pulsation, a banded V-belt resists turnover and whip.

Selecting and Measuring

Match three things: section (A/B/C/D/E or 3L/4L/5L), length, and quantity of grooves. The section is usually stamped on the old belt; if it is worn off, measure the top width and depth and compare to the section dimensions. Length is given as inside (e.g. A48) or outside/effective length depending on the marking system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an A and a B V-belt?

Section letter sets the cross-section. An A (or 4L) belt is about 1/2 inch on top and 5/16 inch deep; a B (or 5L) belt is about 21/32 inch on top and 13/32 inch deep. They are not interchangeable — the belt must match the sheave groove. Check the section stamped on your old belt or measure the top width before ordering.

How do I read a V-belt number like A48 or 4L460?

The letters are the section and the number is the length. A48 is an A-section belt with a 48-inch inside length. 4L460 is a 4L (FHP) belt with a 46.0-inch outside length — the FHP system states length in tenths of an inch. Because the two systems use different length bases, confirm the basis before cross-referencing.

Are D&D V-belts interchangeable with Gates or Continental belts?

Yes. D&D classical belts are built to standard A, B, C, D and E section dimensions, so a belt of a given section and length interchanges with the same size from Gates, Continental, Dayco or Bando. Give us the number printed on your current belt and we will confirm the equivalent.

How long do V-belts last?

Service life depends on tension, sheave condition and environment, not a fixed interval. Belts that are correctly tensioned and aligned, running on undamaged sheaves, commonly last several years. Slipping, squealing, glazing or cracking are signs to replace. Worn sheave grooves will shorten the life of any new belt.
