5V is the most widely used narrow wedge V-belt section. With a 5/8" top width and 17/32" depth, 5V covers the 10 to 100 HP range that spans the majority of medium to heavy industrial drives. A single 5V belt delivers significantly more power than a B section classical belt of the same top width, meaning drives use fewer belts and can use smaller sheaves for more compact layouts.
Texas Belting stocks 5V narrow wedge V-belts in both wrapped (5V) and cogged (5VX) construction from Gates, Continental, Bando, and Diesel Belting. 5V has our deepest narrow wedge inventory. Same-day shipping on stocked lengths from Houston.
5V (Wrapped) vs. 5VX (Cogged)
| Feature | 5V (Wrapped) | 5VX (Cogged) |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Fabric cover on all surfaces | Raw edge sidewalls, molded cogs on underside |
| Minimum sheave OD | 7.1" | 5.5" (significantly smaller) |
| Flexibility | Standard | Higher. Reduced bending resistance. |
| Heat dissipation | Standard | Better. Cogs increase cooling surface area. |
| Service life | Standard | 20-30% longer on most drives |
| Efficiency | Standard | 1-2% higher |
| Cost | Lower | 10-20% higher (offset by longer life) |
| Sheave | 5V groove | Same 5V groove. Fully interchangeable. |
Recommendation: For new installations and most replacements, 5VX cogged is the better choice. It combines the narrow wedge power advantage with cogged flexibility and heat performance. The 5.5" minimum sheave (vs. 7.1" for wrapped 5V) enables more compact drive designs. For standard replacements where cost is the priority, wrapped 5V remains a reliable option.
5V vs. B Section: The Critical Distinction
5V and B section belts are both 5/8" wide at the top. This shared width causes confusion, but they are completely different products with different sheave grooves.
| Feature | B Section | 5V Section |
|---|---|---|
| Top width | 5/8" (same) | 5/8" (same) |
| Depth | 13/32" (shallower) | 17/32" (deeper) |
| Cross-section type | Classical (wider, shallower wedge) | Narrow wedge (narrower, deeper wedge) |
| Sheave groove | B groove (wider, shallower angle) | 5V groove (narrower, deeper angle) |
| HP per belt | 3 to 12 HP typical | 10 to 35 HP typical |
| Interchangeable? | NO. Different groove profiles. A 5V belt in a B groove sits too deep. A B belt in a 5V groove sits too shallow. Both cause poor grip, slippage, and premature failure. | |
| Part number system | Inside length (B100 = 100" inside) | OC x 10 (5V1060 = 106.0" outside) |
5V Part Number Guide
5V part numbers use outside circumference multiplied by 10. This is different from B section, which uses inside length.
| Part Number | Type | Outside Circumference |
|---|---|---|
| 5V500 | Wrapped | 50.0" |
| 5VX500 | Cogged | 50.0" |
| 5V710 | Wrapped | 71.0" |
| 5V800 | Wrapped | 80.0" |
| 5V1000 | Wrapped | 100.0" |
| 5VX1000 | Cogged | 100.0" |
| 5V1060 | Wrapped | 106.0" |
| 5VX1060 | Cogged | 106.0" |
| 5V1250 | Wrapped | 125.0" |
| 5V1500 | Wrapped | 150.0" |
| 5VX1500 | Cogged | 150.0" |
| 5V1900 | Wrapped | 190.0" |
| 5V2360 | Wrapped | 236.0" |
How to calculate: Wrap a tape around the top (outside) surface of the belt. Multiply by 10. OC 106.0" becomes 5V1060 (wrapped) or 5VX1060 (cogged). To upgrade from wrapped to cogged, insert "X" after the section: 5V1060 becomes 5VX1060. Same sheave, same length.
Common Applications for 5V V-Belts
| Application | Typical HP | 5V or 5VX? |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial air compressors | 15 to 75 HP | 5VX strongly recommended. Pulsating loads and heat. |
| Large centrifugal fans and blowers | 15 to 100 HP | 5VX recommended. High speed, continuous duty. |
| Centrifugal and positive displacement pumps | 10 to 75 HP | Either. 5VX for continuous duty. |
| Commercial and industrial HVAC | 10 to 50 HP | 5VX recommended. Compact drive enclosures, warm mechanical rooms. |
| Heavy conveyors (bulk material, aggregate) | 15 to 75 HP | 5VX recommended. Consider banded 5V for multi-belt drives. |
| Paper and pulp machinery | 20 to 100 HP | 5VX recommended. Continuous process duty. |
| Cooling towers | 10 to 50 HP | 5VX recommended. Humid environment, continuous operation. |
| Textile machinery | 10 to 40 HP | Either. 5VX for high-utilization spinning and weaving drives. |
| OEM machine design | 10 to 100 HP | 5VX is the preferred specification for new compact drive designs. |
| Conversions from multi-belt B section | 10 to 50 HP | 2 x 5V or 5VX may replace 3-4 x B with new sheaves. Fewer belts, less maintenance. |
5V vs. Neighboring Narrow Wedge Sections
| Feature | 3V | 5V | 8V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top width | 3/8" | 5/8" | 1" |
| Depth | 5/16" | 17/32" | 7/8" |
| HP range | 1/2 to 25 HP | 10 to 100 HP | 50 to 500+ HP |
| Min sheave OD | 2.65" | 7.1" | 12.5" |
| Best for | Light to medium, compact drives | General industrial, broadest HP range | Heavy to maximum duty, mining, large equipment |
| Cogged variant | 3VX | 5VX | 8VX |
5V is the narrow wedge "sweet spot" covering the broadest HP range. If the drive's design HP is under 25 HP and sheave space is tight, 3V may be sufficient. If the design HP exceeds 100 HP, move up to 8V. For the 10 to 100 HP range that covers the majority of industrial drives, 5V (or 5VX) is the standard choice. See our V-Belt Selection Guide for more help choosing the right belt type.
Converting from B Section to 5V
5V is the natural narrow wedge upgrade path from B-section classical drives. The conversion requires new sheaves but reduces belt count and drive width.
| Classical Setup | 5V Equivalent | Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| 2 x B belts | 1 x 5V (or 1 x 5VX) | Single belt, narrower sheaves, simpler maintenance |
| 3-4 x B belts | 2 x 5V (or 2 x 5VX) | Half the belts, narrower sheaves, reduced maintenance |
| 5-6 x B belts | 3 x 5V (or 3 x 5VX) | Fewer belts, smaller drive footprint, less matching hassle |
Exact conversion requires recalculating the drive design for your specific HP, speed, and service factor. Texas Belting provides B-to-5V conversion assistance. Call 888-203-2358 with your current drive specs.
Frequently Asked Questions
5V V-belts are 5/8" (15.9 mm) top width and 17/32" (13.5 mm) deep. This is the most popular narrow wedge section, covering 10 to 100 HP. 5VX cogged belts have the same dimensions with raw edge sidewalls and molded cogs.
No. Both are 5/8" wide at the top but 5V is 17/32" deep while B is only 13/32" deep. They use completely different sheave grooves and are not interchangeable. A 5V belt in a B groove sits incorrectly and will slip and fail. Always measure the depth or check the sheave marking to determine which you have.
Measure the outside circumference (OC) and multiply by 10. A 5V belt measuring 106.0" OC is a 5V1060 (wrapped) or 5VX1060 (cogged). Note this is different from B section, which uses inside length.
5VX cogged is the better choice for most applications. It delivers 20-30% longer life, better heat dissipation, and handles smaller sheaves (5.5" vs. 7.1" minimum). It fits the same 5V-groove sheaves with no changes. The slight cost premium is offset by longer life. Standard 5V wrapped is acceptable for low-duty drives where cost is the only consideration.
Yes, but it requires new sheaves. A drive running 3-4 x B belts can typically convert to 2 x 5V or 5VX with new 5V-groove sheaves. This reduces belt count, maintenance labor, and drive width. Texas Belting provides conversion calculations. For a no-sheave-change upgrade, use BX cogged belts on your existing B-groove sheaves instead.
5V1060 and 5V1000 are among the most commonly ordered, but the actual most common length depends on equipment. Compressors and blowers use 5V800 through 5V1500 most frequently. HVAC and pumps span 5V500 through 5V1250. Texas Belting stocks the full range.
Yes. 5V is our deepest-stocked narrow wedge section. We carry both 5V and 5VX in the broadest length range from Gates, Continental, Bando, and Diesel Belting. The majority of 5V orders ship same day from Houston. Call 888-203-2358 to confirm availability on your specific length.
V-Belt Drive Components
5V and 5VX belts require 5V-groove sheaves. These are not interchangeable with B-groove sheaves despite the same 5/8" top width. Browse our V-belt drive components, or see our Sheave Selection Guide for help choosing the right one.
