14M Timing Belts (14mm Pitch)
14M timing belts are the largest standard pitch in the HTD curvilinear family, designed for the heaviest industrial synchronous drives. With a 14 mm pitch and tooth height of 6.02 mm, 14M belts deliver maximum torque capacity in applications where 8M (8 mm pitch) belts reach their load limits. Texas Belting stocks 14M timing belts in standard HTD, GT3, and Poly Chain GT Carbon constructions from Gates, Continental, Bando, and Diesel Belting. Same-day shipping from Houston on stocked sizes.

14M Timing Belt Part Number Decoder
14M belts use the standard HTD metric format. The pitch length in mm comes first, followed by the pitch designation, then the width in mm.
| Part Number | Pitch Length | Width | Teeth | Product Line |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 966-14M-55 | 966 mm | 55 mm | 69 | Standard HTD |
| 1400-14M-85 | 1400 mm | 85 mm | 100 | Standard HTD |
| 1778-14M-55 | 1778 mm | 55 mm | 127 | Standard HTD |
| 2590-14M-115 | 2590 mm | 115 mm | 185 | Standard HTD |
| 1778-14MGT-55 | 1778 mm | 55 mm | 127 | PowerGrip GT3 |
| 14MGT-1778-68 | 1778 mm | 68 mm | 127 | Poly Chain GT Carbon |
How to calculate teeth: Divide pitch length by 14. Example: 1778 / 14 = 127 teeth. Poly Chain note: Poly Chain GT Carbon 14M belts reverse the part number order, starting with 14MGT followed by length and width. Standard HTD and GT3 start with the length. If the part number is worn or missing, see our How to Measure a Timing Belt guide.
14M Timing Belt Width Guide
14M belts are available in wider sizes than any other HTD pitch because they serve the heaviest drives. Width directly determines the belt's HP and torque capacity.
| Width (mm) | Width (Approx. Imperial) | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| 40 mm | ~1-9/16" | Medium-heavy drives where 8M at maximum width is insufficient. Least common 14M width. |
| 55 mm | ~2-3/16" | Most popular 14M width. General heavy-duty industrial drives, large compressors, pumps. |
| 85 mm | ~3-3/8" | Heavy conveyors, large machine tools, mining equipment, steel processing. |
| 115 mm | ~4-1/2" | Very heavy industrial. Large conveyor drives, crushers, heavy material handling. |
| 170 mm | ~6-11/16" | Maximum 14M width. Heaviest industrial loads. Mining, steel, marine. |

14M vs. 8M vs. XH: When to Use 14M
14M is the next step up from 8M in the curvilinear family, and serves as a modern metric alternative to the imperial XH (7/8" pitch) trapezoidal profile.
| Factor | 8M (8 mm) | 14M (14 mm) | XH (7/8" / 22.225 mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tooth shape | Curvilinear (HTD/GT) | Curvilinear (HTD/GT) | Trapezoidal (imperial) |
| Load capacity per tooth | Medium-high | Maximum curvilinear | Very high (larger tooth) |
| Minimum pulley teeth | 22 teeth (min) | 28 teeth (min) | 18 teeth (min) |
| Min. pulley diameter | ~56 mm | ~125 mm | ~127 mm |
| Noise | Low | Low (curvilinear advantage) | Higher (trapezoidal mesh) |
| Backlash | Low | Low | Higher |
| Best for | Medium to heavy industrial | Heaviest industrial. Mining, steel, large compressors. | Legacy heavy-duty equipment. Imperial installations. |
| When to choose | Most heavy-duty applications. First choice for new designs. | When 8M at maximum width is insufficient. Heaviest loads. | Existing XH equipment only. New designs favor 14M. |
For new heavy-duty drive designs, 14M is preferred over XH because the curvilinear tooth provides better stress distribution, lower noise, and reduced backlash at comparable load ratings. 14M also has the Poly Chain GT Carbon option for chain replacement, which is not available in XH. See our Tooth Profiles Explained guide for a visual comparison of curvilinear vs. trapezoidal profiles.

14M Timing Belt Materials
Neoprene (HTD and GT3): Standard body material for 14M belts. Neoprene with fiberglass tensile cord and nylon tooth facing. Temperature range -30F to 185F. Good oil and ozone resistance. This covers the vast majority of 14M industrial applications.
Polyurethane + carbon fiber (Poly Chain GT Carbon): Premium construction with a polyurethane body and carbon fiber tensile cord. Delivers up to 3x the load capacity of neoprene HTD at the same belt width. No lubrication required. Clean running. The polyurethane body provides better chemical resistance than neoprene and is suitable for food-adjacent and cleanroom applications where chain oil contamination is unacceptable.
Urethane with steel cord: Polyurethane 14M belts with steel tensile cord are available for FDA food contact, pharmaceutical, chemical exposure, and precision linear motion applications. Open-end urethane 14M belts can be cut to any length.

14M Timing Belt FAQs
A 14M timing belt is a curvilinear (HTD) synchronous belt with a 14 mm pitch. It is the largest standard pitch in the HTD family and is designed for the heaviest industrial drives, including mining conveyors, steel mill equipment, large compressors, and crusher drives. The 14 mm pitch provides maximum torque capacity per tooth in the curvilinear profile range.
Use 14M when 8M at its widest available width does not provide enough torque capacity for your drive. 14M has nearly twice the tooth height of 8M (6.02 mm vs. 3.38 mm), which means significantly higher load capacity per tooth. However, 14M requires larger pulleys (minimum 28 teeth, ~125 mm diameter), so it needs more space than 8M. For most heavy-duty applications, 8M is sufficient. Step up to 14M for the heaviest loads.
Yes. Poly Chain GT Carbon 14M belts are specifically designed to replace ANSI #80, #100, and #120 roller chain drives. The belt runs on standard 14M HTD sprockets and delivers up to 3x the load capacity of standard neoprene 14M belts. Benefits include zero lubrication, dramatically lower noise, reduced maintenance, lighter weight, and cleaner operation. Call 888-203-2358 with your chain size and sprocket tooth counts for a conversion recommendation.
Standard format: [pitch length in mm]-14M-[width in mm]. Example: 1778-14M-55 = 1778 mm pitch length, 14 mm pitch, 55 mm wide, 127 teeth. GT3 format adds "GT": 1778-14MGT-55. Poly Chain reverses the order: 14MGT-1778-68. See our Pitch Chart for all formats.
55 mm is the most commonly stocked 14M width, covering a wide range of heavy-duty industrial applications. 85 mm is the next most common for heavier loads. Widths of 115 mm and 170 mm are used in the heaviest mining, steel, and cement applications and may require longer lead times for some lengths.
Yes. Gates PowerGrip GT3 belts are available at 14M pitch. GT3 uses a modified curvilinear tooth profile that provides higher load capacity and reduced backlash compared to standard HTD at the same pitch. GT3 14M belts are backward compatible with standard HTD 14M pulleys, with full performance on GT3 pulleys.
Yes for standard HTD 14M belts. All manufacturers produce 14M belts to the same dimensional standard. A Gates 1778-14M-55 is directly interchangeable with Continental, Bando, or Diesel Belting 1778-14M-55. Poly Chain GT Carbon is a Gates-exclusive product. Texas Belting cross-references all brands. Measure the pitch by spanning 10 teeth and dividing by 10. A result close to 14 mm confirms a 14M belt. Verify the teeth are rounded (curvilinear), not straight-sided. Measure width straight across. Count total teeth and multiply by 14 mm to get pitch length. See our How to Measure a Timing Belt guide for the full step-by-step process.
