What does an aramid (Kevlar) cord actually change?
An aramid cord changes exactly one thing: the tension member that carries the load. Para-aramid fiber is about five times stronger than steel on an equal-weight basis and barely elongates under tension, so the belt survives shock spikes that snap polyester cords and holds its installed tension instead of seating in. The profile does not change - a 5VK runs in the same sheave grooves as any other 5V belt.
The stretch difference shows up first. Published cord comparisons put aramid length change near half a percent after run-in, against 1 to 2 percent for polyester - so a polyester belt needs a run-in re-tension and an aramid belt typically needs only the installation check. Where every re-tension means a lockout and a guard removal, that alone can carry the upgrade.
On names: Kevlar is DuPont's registered trade name for the para-aramid fiber it developed in 1965; Twaron and Technora are Teijin's equivalents. Belt makers such as Bando, Gates, and Continental buy aramid fiber and twist it into cords - DuPont supplies fiber, not belts. In the field, Kevlar belt, aramid belt, and K-cord belt all mean the same thing: an aramid tension member in an otherwise conventional V-belt.
How to read Kevlar belt part numbers: the K and P codes
Aramid construction hides in a single letter added to an otherwise standard number. Bando flags aramid cord with a K - 3VK, 5VK, 8VK wedge and BK-style classical - while Gates marks its Predator aramid line with a trailing P: AP, BP, CP classical and 3VP, 5VP, 8VP wrapped wedge. Gates' notched aramid premium is the separate Super HC XP line with 5VXP-style numbers. The rest of the number reads exactly like the standard belt, with wedge lengths in tenths of an inch of outside length.

When does upgrading to an aramid belt pay off?
Aramid pays off where belts die from shock rather than wear: drives that slam from rest, load in spikes, or pulse every cycle. If you replace snapped belts monthly on a crusher or chipper, the upgrade usually costs less than the downtime it removes. If belts on a steady drive wear out on schedule, standard polyester construction remains the economical buy.

Clutching drives deserve the aramid default. Every engagement drops a stopped implement onto a spinning sheave, and the belt takes the difference through its cords. The premium lines pair the cord with covers built for that duty: the Predator bareback double-layer fabric cover permits momentary slip under extreme shock, and aramid lawn-and-garden belts use dry cover fabrics for the same reason.
For steady, well-aligned drives - fans, most pumps, compressors under stable load - save the premium and fit standard 3VX or 5VX cogged belts, or classical A, B, C, D sections.

Tensioning and matching rules for aramid belts
Aramid belts install like standard belts with two exceptions: tension by measured deflection force rather than feel, and never mix cord types on one drive. An aramid belt at correct tension feels board-tight to a hand calibrated on polyester, so feel-tensioned aramid drives usually end up loose - and a loose aramid belt slips and burns like any other.
- Tension by the numbers. Deflect the span 1/64 inch per inch of span length and check the force against the manufacturer's published values for the aramid line - not the generic table, never feel.
- Never mix cord types. On a multi-belt drive, the stiffer aramid belts take nearly the whole load while polyester belts loaf; the loaded belts fail early and the drive loses capacity.
- Replace matched sets completely. All belts, one manufacturer, one construction - and never replace a single band of a banded set.
- Recheck once, then trust it. Verify tension after the first day and expect little movement; a re-tension that keeps coming back points at grooves or alignment, not the belt.
- Gauge the grooves first. Shiny, dished, or bottomed-out grooves destroy the new aramid belt on the same schedule as the old ones.

Construction differs more than the table suggests. Bando builds Power Ace Aramid as a wrapped belt and publishes roughly 50 percent higher breaking strength and 40 percent higher capacity than its conventional line, with ARPM (RMA) static-conductivity compliance. Gates Predator is also a wrapped construction, but its double-layer cover is bareback - no rubber treatment - so it sheds debris and permits momentary slip under extreme overload, with published ratings at least 40 percent above standard construction. Predator's dry cover favors clutching and debris; Bando's rubber-treated wrap is the closer like-for-like where the OEM fitted a conventional wrapped belt.

Common Kevlar belt selection mistakes
- Mixing cord types on one drive. The stiff aramid belts carry everything while the polyester belts loaf. Replace the full set with one construction.
- Buying aramid to fix a sheave problem. If grooves are glazed, dished, or bottomed out, any belt fails fast. Gauge the grooves before spending the premium.
- Tensioning by feel. Aramid belts feel over-tight at correct tension. Use a tension tester and the manufacturer's deflection-force values for the aramid line.
- Reading 5VK as a cog code. K flags the aramid cord, X flags the notch. A 5VX is not an aramid belt, and swapping one into an aramid slot restarts the failures.
- Ignoring where the shock goes next. The old belts were the drive's fuse. After the upgrade, check keys, bushings, and cast sheaves - the spike now reaches them.
- Replacing part of a set. One new belt among run-in belts concentrates load on the newest member. Change complete sets.

Are Kevlar V-belts worth the extra cost?
