How do I calculate V-belt length from pulley sizes?

How do I measure a worn V-belt to identify it?

Wrap a string around the outside of the belt and measure it to get the outside circumference, then measure the belt's top width to find the cross-section. For example, a 1/2 inch wide belt with a 70 inch outside circumference is an A68 or 4L700. Our ID-a-Belt tool converts the measurement to the standard designation.

What is teeth in mesh on a timing belt drive?

Teeth in mesh is the number of belt teeth engaged with the small pulley. Below 6 teeth in mesh, the drive may ratchet or shear teeth under load, so most applications need 6 or more. Increasing center distance or the small pulley's tooth count raises teeth in mesh.

How do I know which V-belt cross-section I have?

Measure the belt's top width: 1/2 inch is an A or 4L section, 21/32 inch is a B or 5L, 7/8 inch is a C, 5/8 inch is a 5V wedge, and 3/8 inch is a 3V or 3L. If the belt has molded cogs on the underside it is a cogged (X) version. Call (888) 203-2358 if you are unsure.
