The section is the belt's cross-sectional profile – it must match the sheave groove exactly. Every link below opens our live inventory filtered to that section, with further filters for length, width, brand and price. If you only have the number printed on the old belt, the prefix is usually the section: B85 is a B-section belt, 5VX630 is a 5VX.

Reading a worn belt: if the print is gone, measure top width and depth and compare against the table above – then confirm with our belt identification guide. A 1/2 in top width with a 5/16 in depth is an A section; 21/32 in over 13/32 in is a B.

Wrapped vs cogged: which construction?

Wrapped belts wear a fabric jacket around the core; cogged (notched) belts expose molded notches on the underside. Cogged belts flex around small sheaves with less internal heat, which is why they outlast wrapped belts on compact high-speed drives. Wrapped belts tolerate abrasive dust and occasional slip better, and cost less in the classical sections.

As a rule of thumb: choose cogged (AX/BX/CX, 3VX/5VX, XPZ/XPA/XPB) when sheave diameters are near the minimum for the section, when the drive runs hot, or when you want a few percent better efficiency. Choose wrapped when the drive is dusty, lightly loaded, or was engineered around wrapped-belt tension ratings. Both run in the same groove – a 5VX and a 5V interchange dimensionally on the same sheave.

When to use banded V-belts

Banded V-belts join two or more individual belts under one common back so the set enters and leaves the sheave as a single unit. They stop the belt-flip and whip you get from matched single belts on pulsating loads – crushers, chippers, compressors, oil-field pumping units. If your multi-belt drive keeps throwing or rolling one belt of a matched set, a banded set is usually the fix. Kevlar and aramid-cord V-belts

Kevlar (aramid) tension cords replace polyester in belts built for shock loads, clutching drives and low-stretch requirements – rotary mowers, tillers, oil-field equipment and heavily loaded compact drives. Aramid cord stretches far less than polyester, so re-tensioning intervals get longer, and it survives the shock of engaged-flywheel starts. Matching sheaves and grooves

A V-belt only performs to its rating in a groove cut for its section. Worn or mismatched grooves glaze belts, cut belt life sharply and show up as bottoming (the belt riding the groove floor) or dishing (sidewall wear). Common V-belt selection mistakes

  • Replacing one belt of a multi-belt set. New belts carry the load while stretched old ones idle – the new belt then fails early. Replace the full set.
  • Reading A and 4L as interchangeable. They share a top width, but 4L belts are built lighter for fractional-horsepower duty. On industrial drives, use the A section.
  • Ignoring the groove. A worn sheave destroys new belts in weeks. Gauge grooves whenever a belt fails early.
  • Prying a belt over the sheave flange. That snaps tension cords invisibly; the belt fails at a fraction of rated life. Shorten the center distance and slip it on loose.
  • Tensioning by feel. Under-tension slips and glazes; over-tension kills bearings. Use deflection force values for the section and span.
  • Assuming metric SP sections match inch sections. SPA is close to A but not identical – groove angles and depths differ. Match the machine's spec.

Frequently asked questions

What do V-belt section letters like A, B and 5V mean?

The letters name the cross-section profile. Classical sections A, B, C and D step up in top width from 1/2 in to 1-1/4 in. Narrow wedge sections 3V, 5V and 8V pack more horsepower into less width. The section must match the sheave groove; the number after it is the belt length.

Can I run a cogged belt in a standard sheave?

Yes. Cogged belts such as AX, BX or 5VX use the same groove dimensions as their wrapped counterparts, so they run in the same sheaves. The notches only change how easily the belt flexes, which helps on small-diameter sheaves and hot-running drives.

What is the difference between 3V and 3VX?

Both are 3/8 in wide narrow wedge belts that share sheaves. The X means molded cogs: 3VX belts flex around smaller sheaves, run cooler and typically carry higher ratings on compact drives. Use 3VX when sheave diameters are small; either works on larger sheaves.

How do I identify a V-belt with no markings?

Measure the top width and depth and compare to standard sections: 1/2 in wide is an A, 21/32 in a B, 7/8 in a C, 5/8 in with a deep profile a 5V. Then measure outside length around the belt. Our identification and measuring guides walk through it step by step.

When should I use a banded V-belt instead of single belts?

Use a banded set when individual belts of a multi-belt drive whip, roll over in the groove or throw off under pulsating loads. The common back ties the strands together so they enter the sheave as one unit. Crushers, compressors and pumping units are typical banded applications.

How often should industrial V-belts be replaced?

There is no fixed calendar interval – replace on condition. Look for cracking, glazing, sidewall wear, or a belt riding low in the groove. On multi-belt drives, replace all belts as a set, check tension after the first day of run-in, and gauge the sheave grooves at every change.
