ANSI chain numbers encode the pitch: the leading digits are the pitch in eighths of an inch, so #40 chain is 4/8 = 1/2 in pitch and #60 is 6/8 = 3/4 in. Every link below opens live inventory for that size – chain plus matching sprockets – with bore, tooth-count and brand filters alongside.

Pitches are ANSI standard dimensions (B29.1 single-pitch; B29.3/B29.4 double-pitch). Match pitch, roller width and strand count before ordering.

Chain wear rule: roller chain is worn out at about 3 percent elongation – measure 12 pitches; if they span more than 12.36 in on #80 chain (12 in nominal), replace it – and hold the limit closer to 1.5 percent on fixed-center drives or large sprockets. Replace sprockets that ran with stretched chain: hooked teeth destroy new chain in weeks.

QD vs Taper-Lock bushings

Most sheaves and sprockets mount through a tapered bushing system rather than a plain bore. QD bushings have a bolt flange and a split through both flange and barrel – tightening the cap screws draws the bushing into the hub taper. Taper-Lock bushings are flangeless and sit flush inside the hub for a cleaner profile. The two systems are not interchangeable: the hub is machined for one or the other. Match the bushing series stamped on the hub (SH, SDS, SK, E for QD; 1108, 2517, 3020 style numbers for Taper-Lock), then pick the bore.

Oil seals by shaft and bore size

An oil seal is specified by three dimensions: shaft diameter, housing bore, and width. When a seal fails early, check the shaft for a groove worn at the lip line – a wear sleeve restores the sealing surface without machining.

Common power transmission mistakes

  • Measuring chain by roller width instead of pitch. Pitch is pin-center to pin-center. Two chains with similar rollers can be different sizes entirely.
  • Putting new chain on worn sprockets. Hooked, shark-finned teeth wear a new chain to match in weeks. Inspect sprockets at every chain change.
  • Guessing bearing bore from the shaft's nominal size. Measure the bearing seat – worn seats and metric/inch lookalikes (25 mm vs 1 in) bite constantly.
  • Mixing bushing systems. A Taper-Lock bushing will not seat in a QD hub or vice versa. Match the system and series stamped on the hub.
  • Ordering seals by OD alone. Shaft diameter and width matter just as much – and a grooved shaft needs a wear sleeve or the new seal leaks on day one.
  • Swapping motors across frames. Same HP does not mean same fit. The NEMA frame number controls shaft height, diameter and mounting.

Frequently asked questions

What do roller chain numbers like #40 and #60 mean?

The leading digits give the pitch in eighths of an inch: #40 is 4/8 = 1/2 in, #60 is 6/8 = 3/4 in, #120 is 12/8 = 1-1/2 in. A final 0 means standard roller chain, a final 5 means rollerless bushing chain like #25 and #35, and #41 is a narrow, lighter 1/2 in chain.

How do I measure roller chain size?

Measure the pitch – the distance from one pin center to the next – then the roller diameter and the inside width between link plates. Compare against ANSI dimensions, and count strands for multi-strand chain. A worn chain measures long: check pitch over 12 links, not one.

What is the difference between QD and Taper-Lock bushings?

QD bushings have a bolt flange and are split through flange and barrel; cap screws draw the bushing into the hub's taper. Taper-Lock bushings are flangeless and mount flush inside the hub. The hub is machined for one system only, so they never interchange – match what is stamped on the hub.

How do I read a bearing number like 6205-2RS?

The 6 marks a deep-groove ball bearing and 2 the dimension series. For bore codes of 04 and up, multiply the last two digits by 5 for the bore in millimeters – 05 means a 25 mm bore. 2RS means rubber seals on both sides; ZZ means metal shields.

When do I use a pillow block versus a flange bearing?

Use a pillow block when the shaft runs parallel to the mounting surface – it bolts down flat and carries the shaft above it. Use a flange unit when the shaft passes through a wall, plate or frame perpendicular to the mounting face. Both take the same insert-bearing principle with different housings.

What do I need to know to order an oil seal?

Three dimensions: shaft diameter, housing bore, and seal width – plus the lip style and material for the fluid and temperature. If the old seal's number is readable, we can cross-reference it directly; if the shaft shows a wear groove at the lip line, add a wear sleeve to the order.
