What does 800-8M-30 mean?
An 8M part number reads pitch length, profile, width - all in millimeters. 800-8M-30 is 800 mm pitch length, 8 mm HTD tooth pitch, 30 mm belt width. Tooth count equals pitch length divided by 8, so an 800-8M carries 100 teeth. The pattern scales: a 1440-8M-50 is 1440 mm around, 180 teeth, 50 mm wide.
HTD (High Torque Drive) is the curvilinear tooth form Gates developed in the 1970s to replace trapezoidal timing-belt teeth. The rounded tooth spreads load across the root instead of concentrating stress at sharp corners, which is why 8M is a workhorse on fans, pumps, compressors, and conveyors in this class. HTD 8M vs 8MGT vs Poly Chain: which belts fit which sprockets?
Three 8 mm pitch families share this space: HTD 8M, Gates PowerGrip GT (8MGT, now in GT3 and GT4 generations), and Gates Poly Chain GT Carbon 8MGT. They are not one profile. The GT tooth is a deeper, modified curvilinear form that fits HTD grooves; the HTD tooth does not fit GT grooves; and Poly Chain runs only in its own sprockets.
Per the Gates Belt/Sprocket Interchange Guide, the only sanctioned cross-profile combination at 8 mm is a PowerGrip GT belt replacing an HTD belt in existing HTD sprockets - replacement only, running quieter but with more backlash than in GT sprockets. The reverse has no compatibility: the HTD tooth is too large to seat in a GT groove. Poly Chain belts will not wrap HTD or GT sprockets, and HTD or GT belts will not seat in Poly Chain grooves.

Two cautions ride along. Published belt ratings apply only to belts run in their intended sprockets - an 8MGT belt in HTD sprockets is an HTD-class drive, not GT-rated. When is the Poly Chain upgrade worth it?
Poly Chain GT Carbon pairs a polyurethane body with carbon fiber tensile cords, so it carries far more load than a rubber belt of the same width - Poly Chain drives are typically specified narrower than the HTD drives they replace. It earns its cost on low-speed high-torque drives, corrosive washdown areas, and drives that have maxed out 8M width. It is a system conversion, not a belt swap: budget for Poly Chain belts plus new sprockets and bushings.

The trap row is C8M: it reads like a plain 8M number with a prefix, but the CTD tooth groups with Poly Chain style sprockets, not HTD. When the print is gone, our cross-reference tool or a photo to the counter sorts it fast.
How to choose 8M belt width
Width is the capacity lever inside a pitch: a drive that strips teeth or needs more horsepower takes a wider belt in the same profile, up to the sprocket face width. Standard stock widths are 20, 30, 50, and 85 mm, and typical published ratings scale roughly with width - manufacturers publish exact width factors.
- Match the OEM width first. Replacing a 30 mm belt with a 20 mm off the shelf under-belts the drive and invites tooth shear.
- Going wider needs sprocket room. The sprocket face must be at least as wide as the belt; flanges do not count as usable width.
- Maxed out at 85 mm? Step up in system, not width: 14M pitch (see our HTD 14M guide) or a Poly Chain conversion carries more load in the same envelope.
- Narrow widths (10-15 mm) exist for light drives, typically cut from sleeves - quote lead time, not shelf stock.
How do I measure a worn 8M belt?
Count teeth, do not stretch tapes. Tooth count times 8 gives pitch length in millimeters, and pitch length plus width rebuilds the part number: a belt with 100 teeth and a 30 mm back is an 800-8M-30, whatever remains of the printing. Counting stays accurate on a worn belt because wear changes the surface but cannot change the number of teeth.
- Confirm the pitch: measure center-to-center across several teeth - eleven tooth centers spanning 80 mm (ten 8 mm gaps) means 8 mm pitch; rounded teeth at 8 mm reads HTD 8M.
- Count the teeth: mark one tooth with paint, roll the belt along a flat surface, and count to the mark. Count twice - a one-tooth miscount is an 8 mm error.
- Measure the width across the belt back. Worn edges narrow a belt slightly, so round to the nearest standard width: 20, 30, 50, 85.

Why do 8M timing belts fail?
Synchronous belts rarely die of old age; they are killed by tension, alignment, or sprockets. Read the failure pattern off the dead belt before the replacement goes on - a new 8M installed into the conditions that ate the last one buys weeks, not years.
- Sheared teeth: shock loads, under-tension, or worn sprockets. A loose belt ratchets - it climbs the sprocket teeth and jumps position, shearing belt teeth as it goes. Hooked, shiny sprocket teeth do the same damage at full tension.
- Edge wear or fraying: misalignment or a bent flange steering the belt against one side. Square the shafts before blaming the belt.
- Cracking at tooth roots: heat, age, or sprockets below the belt's minimum diameter. Check for a seized idler cooking the drive.
- Snapped tensile cords: almost always installation damage - prying a belt over a flange kinks the fiberglass cords. Move the take-up and slip the belt on loose.
Before installing: inspect sprocket tooth profiles, check flanges, verify alignment, set tension to spec. If the sprockets are past saving, 8M sprockets in QD and Taper-Lock styles are available alongside the belts.

Common HTD 8M selection mistakes
- Ordering off an outside tape measurement. The part number encodes pitch length at the cord line. Count teeth and multiply by 8 instead.
- Assuming HTD and GT swap both ways. A GT 8MGT belt replaces an HTD belt in HTD sprockets; an HTD belt will not seat in GT sprockets. Check the sprocket profile, not just the pitch.
- Buying a Poly Chain 8MGT number for an HTD drive. Same pitch, wrong system - Poly Chain requires Poly Chain sprockets.
- Reusing hooked sprockets. Worn sprocket teeth shear new belt teeth within weeks. Inspect with the belt off.
