When should you use a banded V-belt instead of individual belts?
Band the drive when individual belts misbehave: whip and flutter on long center distances, turnover in the grooves, belts thrown under pulsating or shock loads, and single belts wandering on vertical-shaft drives. The tie band locks every strand to its neighbors, so no belt can twist or climb out alone. On smooth, steady drives, individual belts remain the better buy: cheaper, easier to install, and more forgiving.

What sections and band counts do banded belts come in?
Banded sets are made in every mainstream V-belt section: 3V and 3VX at 3/8 in top width per band, 5V and 5VX at 5/8 in, 8V at 1 in, and classical A (1/2 in), B (21/32 in), C (7/8 in), and D (1-1/4 in). Two- through five-band sets cover most drives; wider sets are quoted on request.

Classical sections band just as well as wedge: a banded set keeps an older A/B/C/D multi-groove drive running without re-sheaving. Never mix banded and single belts – matched replacement rules
A banded set and single belts must never share a drive: they ride and stretch differently, so one component carries too much of the load and wears out fast. The same logic applies across band sets – on drives running two or more sets side by side, replace every set at the same time.
- Never run a banded set alongside individual belts. Fill the drive with matching sets or with singles – not a mix.
- Replace all sets on a multi-set drive together. A new set paired with a run-in set takes the beating.
- Keep one manufacturer and one construction across the drive. Ride depth and elongation vary between brands and builds.
- Do not replace one torn-out strand. When one strand or the band fails, the set is done.
How do you tension a banded V-belt?
Tension a banded set with the force-deflection method, treating it as its band count of single belts: the target deflection is 1/64 in per inch of span, and the required force at that deflection equals the published single-belt deflection force multiplied by the number of bands. A three-band 5VX set needs roughly three times the force of one 5VX belt.
- 1. Measure the span between the points where the belt touches each sheave.
- 2. Target deflection = span / 64. A 32 in span deflects 1/2 in.
- 3. Look up the single-belt deflection force for the section and small-sheave diameter in the manufacturer's table.
- 4. Multiply by the band count and press at mid-span on the tie band to that force.
- 5. Recheck after run-in – new sets seat into the grooves and lose tension in the first hours of operation.

Do banded belts need special sheaves?
No – a banded set runs in the same standard-groove sheaves as the matching single belts, with the tie band riding above the grooves. There is no special banded sheave to buy. Two rules apply: never run a joined set in deep-groove sheaves, and never install one over worn or unevenly worn grooves.
Deep-groove sheaves are a turnover fix for single belts, but they sink the strands of a joined set low enough that the groove lands can cut the tie band – the two turnover fixes do not stack. Worn grooves do the same damage more slowly: dished sidewalls let strands ride deeper, and strands at different depths make the band bridge and peel. Backside idlers matter too: a flat idler rides directly on the tie band's back, so an undersized, seized, or grooved-up idler flexes and scuffs the band every revolution. Keep idlers large and free-spinning.
Tie band separation: causes and what it looks like
A separating tie band shows up as edges lifting off the outer strands, rubber crumbs under the drive, exposed transverse cords, or one strand torn free. The band rarely fails on its own – it is attacked from below by the sheave or from above by an idler, and the failure names the culprit.
- Worn sheave grooves – the most common cause. Strands ride low and the lands between grooves abrade the band until it delaminates.
- Backside idler damage – a too-small, seized, or chewed-up idler cracks and peels the band from the top.
- Debris in the drive – aggregate, grain dust, or chips in the grooves lift strands unevenly and pry at the band.
- Pry-bar installation – levering a set over the rim tears band plies and snaps cords. Shorten the centers and walk the set on loose.
- Misalignment – one band edge scuffing faster than the other points at sheave alignment, not the belt.

Common banded V-belt selection mistakes
- Replacing a banded set with loose singles. The drive was banded because singles whipped or flipped; the failure comes back.
- Installing a new set on worn grooves. Worn lands chew the tie band from below. Gauge grooves at every change.
- Mixing banded and single belts, or new and old sets. Unequal ride and stretch means one component always overloads.
- Tensioning by feel without multiplying by band count. A set that feels tight at single-belt force is badly slack.
- Prying the set over the sheave. Band plies and cords fail on the bar, not in service. Open the centers and walk it on.
- Ordering by overall width. Measure one strand's top width, count the strands, and read the length off the print line.
