What does 1400-14M-55 mean on a timing belt?
A 14M belt number reads pitch length – profile – width, all in millimeters. 1400-14M-55 is a belt with a 1400 mm pitch length, the 14M profile (14 mm from tooth center to tooth center), and a 55 mm width. Divide pitch length by 14 to get the tooth count: 1400 / 14 = 100 teeth. Most HTD 14M lines pack the same three fields into the number, but not all: Bando's S14M numbering runs width-first, so 400-S14M-1190 is 40 mm wide and 1190 mm long. When in doubt, verify with the cross-reference tool.
- 966-14M-40: 966 mm pitch length, 40 mm wide, 966 / 14 = 69 teeth.
- 2100-14M-85: 2100 mm pitch length, 85 mm wide, 150 teeth.

Pitch length is measured at the tension cords, not around the outside of the back. The 14M tooth is deep – roughly 6 mm tall on a belt about 10 mm thick – which is what lets the profile carry crusher-class torque. Catalog prefixes vary: HTD14M, S14M, and RPP14 all mark 14 mm pitch belts, and in our catalog a bare 14M is an HTD-profile belt.

Choosing a 14M belt width
Width is the capacity lever on a 14M drive: published rating tables scale load capacity close to proportionally with belt width, so an 85 mm belt carries roughly double the load of a 40 mm belt on the same sprockets. Match the belt to the sprocket face width, and replace like for like unless you are re-rating the drive.
If a correctly tensioned belt keeps shearing teeth, stepping up in width is the standard fix – but it means wider sprockets too. With no room for a wider drive, the alternative is stronger construction: a carbon-cord Poly Chain GT package, covered below.
Where do HTD 14M drives run?
14M is the heavy pitch of the HTD family, the step up from 8M when torque climbs and speeds drop. Typical homes are rock crushers, hammer mills, mixers and agitators, large fans and blowers, pumps, shredders, and long conveyors – drives in the tens to hundreds of horsepower where V-belts slip or demand constant re-tensioning.
Because the belt is toothed, a 14M drive holds exact ratio with no creep. For maintenance planners the draw is scheduled-work reduction: no lubrication, no slip-driven re-tension cycles, and replacement intervals set by inspection instead of failure.
Can a 14M synchronous belt replace a roller chain drive?
Often, yes – heavy synchronous belts are the standard conversion for maintenance-heavy chain drives. A 14M drive needs no lubrication, does not elongate the way a chain wears into slack, runs quieter, and holds roughly 98 percent efficiency for its life in published comparisons, while a worn, poorly lubricated chain drive falls into the low 90s.
The conversion is a redesign, not a swap: sprocket diameters, center distance, belt width, and shock service factors all get recalculated, and synchronous sprockets often run larger than the chain sprockets they replace, so check guard clearance first. Washdown and corrosive environments favor the belt strongly – no chain to rust, no oil to wash off.
HTD 14M vs Gates Poly Chain 14MGT
HTD 14M is the rubber workhorse: a neoprene body, fiberglass tension cords, and a nylon tooth facing. Gates Poly Chain GT Carbon 14MGT is the premium alternative – a polyurethane belt with carbon fiber tension cords that Gates rates substantially higher per millimeter of width, so the same load runs on a narrower belt and narrower sprockets.

Specify Poly Chain when space is tight, when washdown or chemicals attack rubber, or when replacing roller chain with chain-narrow hardware. Stay with HTD 14M when the drive is built for it and performing – the belt is cheaper and stocked deep.
HTD 14M interchange and equivalent designations
Most major manufacturers publish a 14 mm pitch curvilinear belt that crosses to HTD 14M by pitch length and width. The designation, and sometimes the exact tooth form, changes with the brand; pitch, length, and width cross directly. Verify before ordering.

How do I measure a worn HTD 14M belt?
Count the teeth and multiply by 14: that is the pitch length in millimeters, and with the width off the belt back you have the full part number. A 150-tooth belt 85 mm wide is a 2100-14M-85. Never wrap a tape around a belt to size it – the outside surface reads longer than the pitch length at the cords.
- Markings legible: the number molded on the back is the size. Cross brands with our belt cross-reference tool.
- Markings gone: mark one tooth, count all the way around, multiply by 14.
- Belt destroyed: count teeth on both sprockets and measure the center distance, then use the belt length calculator to recover the pitch length.
Tension and alignment on 14M drives
Big synchronous drives rarely die of old age; they die of under-tension and misalignment. An under-tensioned 14M belt climbs the sprocket teeth under shock load and jumps – ratcheting – which shears teeth in clusters and can take out the drive in hours. Misalignment runs the belt hard against a sprocket flange, wearing one edge, fraying cords, and unloading half the tooth face.
- Set tension by numbers, not feel: use the manufacturer's force-deflection values or a sonic tension meter, per our timing belt tension guide.
- Recheck after run-in: verify tension after the first hours, then leave it – synchronous belts do not need periodic re-tensioning like V-belts.
- Align before tensioning: straightedge or laser across both sprocket faces; correct angular and parallel offset until the belt tracks without flange contact.
- Inspect on a schedule: look for cracked tooth roots, exposed cords at an edge, and dust from the nylon facing – each points to a specific tension or alignment fault.
14M sprockets and bushings
14M sprockets mount with QD or Taper-Lock bushings in the common sizes, which makes replacement a bushing swap instead of a bore-and-key job. Stock lines generally start around 28 teeth and run well past 200, flanged and unflanged, in face widths matched to the standard belt widths. Check sprocket wear with the belt off: polished or hooked groove flanks, ridges at the groove roots, and thinned lands mean the sprocket has re-cut its own profile and will chew through a new belt in a fraction of its life. Common HTD 14M selection mistakes
- Ordering by outside length. A tape around the belt back reads longer than the pitch length in the part number. Count teeth and multiply by 14 instead.
- Treating every 14 mm belt as interchangeable. Rubber 14MGT runs in HTD sprockets per Gates; polyurethane Poly Chain 14MGT does not. Check construction before crossing.
- Reusing worn sprockets. Hooked flanks and root ridges destroy a new belt fast. Inspect with the belt off and replace as a set when wear shows.
- Under-tensioning after install. A loose 14M drive ratchets under shock load and shears teeth in clusters. Tension by deflection force, then recheck after run-in.
- Prying the belt over a flange. Crowbarred cords fail weeks later with no visible damage. Move the centers or pull a sprocket.
