The crown face design is what distinguishes a flat belt idler from a V-belt idler. The slight convex curvature across the pulley face keeps the belt centered without needing edge guides. If your belt tracks off to one side under load, a crowned idler will pull it back to center.
Cast iron construction (P-prefix) is the workhorse choice for most industrial applications. Composite nylon (BF-prefix) reduces weight by roughly half and is preferred for food handling, packaging lines, and any environment where stainless or non-corroding parts are required. Flanged variants (F-suffix) add a raised edge on one or both sides for applications where belt centering needs hard mechanical limits, not just the crown.
