Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy a chassis drive or an enclosed package?
If you have panel space, cooling, and someone to wire disconnect and operators, a chassis drive is cheapest. If the drive mounts on a wall, outdoors, or in washdown, a pre-wired NEMA-rated package installs in hours and carries the enclosure rating as a unit.
What is a bypass panel and when do I need one?
A bypass contactor arrangement that runs the motor across the line if the VFD faults or needs service. Any pump or fan that cannot tolerate downtime - municipal water, cooling towers, critical ventilation - should carry bypass.
What size starter does a 25 HP 460V motor need?
NEMA size 2 covers 25 HP at 460V three-phase (and 15 HP at 230V). Set the overload relay to the motor's nameplate FLA - roughly 34 amps for a typical 25 HP at 460V.
Why use a pump controller instead of a plain starter?
Pump controllers add the protection pumping actually needs - phase loss, undervoltage, rapid-cycle protection, and often level or pressure logic - in one listed package. The Siemens 3RE48 line covers NEMA-rated simplex duty.
Do enclosed drives need extra cooling outdoors in Texas?
Heat is the limit: most drives derate above 40°C (104°F) ambient, which a sun-struck enclosure exceeds easily. Shade hoods, north-facing mounts, or oversized enclosures with ventilation keep summer trips away - we factor this into every outdoor quote.
