What Are Standard & Straight Warp Rubber Belts?

Standard grade 2 and straight warp rubber conveyor belts are the workhorses of heavy duty bulk material handling. Grade 2 belts use multiple plies of polyester or polyester-nylon fabric impregnated with SBR or natural rubber, providing reliable tensile strength from 150 PIW through 440 PIW in 2, 3, and 4 ply configurations. Straight warp belts use a single-ply woven construction with longitudinal (warp) yarns providing tensile strength and lateral (fill) yarns providing transverse rigidity — achieving higher ratings up to 660 PIW with excellent impact resistance and troughability. Texas Belting stocks both constructions with top and bottom cover thicknesses matched to the abrasion and impact demands of each application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PIW mean?+
PIW stands for Pounds per Inch of Width, which is the rated tensile strength of the belt per inch of belt width. A 330 PIW belt can handle 330 pounds of pulling force per inch of width. Higher PIW ratings are needed for longer conveyors, heavier loads, and steeper inclines.
What is the difference between Grade 2 and straight warp belts?+
Grade 2 belts use multiple woven fabric plies laminated together with rubber. Straight warp belts use a single-ply construction with high-strength longitudinal yarns. Straight warp offers better impact resistance, less stretch, and higher ratings in a thinner profile, but at higher cost.
What cover thickness should I specify?+
Top cover thickness depends on the abrasiveness of the material being conveyed. Light abrasion (grain, packages): 1/16" to 1/8". Moderate abrasion (sand, gravel): 3/16" to 1/4". Heavy abrasion (sharp rock, ore): 5/16" to 3/8". Bottom cover protects against pulley wear.
Can these belts be used on inclines?+
Standard smooth-cover grade 2 belts can handle inclines up to about 18 degrees depending on the material. For steeper angles, add roughtop, cleat, or chevron profiles. Many grade 2 specifications are cross-referenced into our Incline category.
What ply count do I need?+
Ply count depends on conveyor length, belt tension, and load weight. 2 ply (150-220 PIW) for short conveyors and light loads. 3 ply (330 PIW) for medium conveyors. 4 ply (440 PIW) for long conveyors and heavy loads. Our engineers can help calculate the right specification.
How are heavy duty rubber belts spliced?+
Vulcanized splices (hot or cold) provide the strongest joint for heavy duty applications. Mechanical fasteners are used for temporary repairs or where vulcanizing equipment is not available. Splice type affects belt tension rating — vulcanized splices maintain full belt strength.
