Urethane vs. Rubber Band Saw Tires

Feature Urethane (This Product) ✅ Rubber
Installation No glue needed — soak in hot water 5–10 min, stretch on Requires contact cement adhesive — messy, time-consuming
Downtime After Install Ready to use as soon as tire cools — same day Must wait 24 hours for adhesive to cure
Lifespan Lasts several years longer; resists dry rot, cracking, and brittleness Shorter lifespan; prone to dry rot and cracking in warm or dry environments
Blade Tracking Crowned profile keeps blade centered on wheel; improves tracking accuracy Flat profile; less consistent tracking over time
Blade Life Extends blade life by reducing vibration and wheel contact Worn rubber increases vibration and shortens blade life
Removal Easily pried off without residue — no glue cleanup Glue residue must be fully removed before installing new tires
Dry Rot Resistance Does not rot or crack from sitting idle Susceptible to dry rot even when not in regular use
Cost Over Time Higher upfront; lower cost per year due to longer lifespan Lower upfront; replaced more frequently, higher long-term cost
Best For Woodworking, hobbyist, and professional band saw applications Non-standard wheel widths; can be trimmed to fit

How to Install 12" Urethane Band Saw Tires

No adhesive, no special tools. Installation takes about 15 minutes per tire.

  1. Unplug the saw and remove the blade. Open the blade guard and release the blade tension. Set the blade aside.
  2. Remove the old tires. Pry off the existing rubber or urethane tire from each wheel using a flathead screwdriver or your fingers. If the old tire was glued on, scrape off any adhesive residue so the wheel surface is clean and smooth.
  3. Soak the new urethane tires in hot water. Fill a bucket or sink with hot water (up to 120°F — hot tap water works). Submerge both tires for 5–10 minutes. This softens the urethane and makes it pliable enough to stretch over the wheel.
  4. Stretch the tire onto the wheel. While the tire is still warm, hook one edge over the wheel rim. Work your way around the wheel, pulling and stretching the tire until it seats fully in the wheel channel. Repeat for the second wheel.
  5. Let the tires cool. As the urethane returns to room temperature, it contracts and grips the wheel tightly — no glue needed. Wait 15–30 minutes before proceeding.
  6. Reinstall the blade and set tension. Thread the blade back onto both wheels, close the guard, and adjust tension and tracking per your saw's manual. Spin the wheels by hand to verify the blade tracks centered on both tires.
  7. Make a test cut. Plug in the saw, let it run for 30 seconds to confirm smooth operation, then make a test cut on scrap wood to verify blade tracking and cut quality.

💡 Tip: If the tire feels too tight to stretch on, reheat it in hot water for another few minutes. Never use boiling water — it can warp the urethane. Need more detail? Read our full guide: Urethane vs. Rubber Band Saw Tires: Which Is Better?

Frequently Asked Questions

▸ What size band saw wheels do these tires fit?
These tires are designed for 12-inch band saw wheels that are 7/8 inch wide (12" × 7/8"). This covers popular models from Craftsman and Jet. Fits wheel diameters from 11-5/8" to 12-1/2". Can be trimmed to fit if needed.
▸ Do I need glue or adhesive to install these tires?
No. These heavy-duty urethane tires self-grip the wheel — no adhesive, cement, or glue is required. This makes installation cleaner and future tire replacements much easier than rubber tires that are glued on.
▸ How do I install 12" band saw tires?
Remove the old tires from both wheels. Soak the new urethane tires in hot water (up to 120°F) for about 5–10 minutes — this softens the urethane and makes it pliable enough to stretch over the wheel. While the tire is still warm, stretch it over the wheel starting at one point and working your way around. Repeat for the second wheel. Allow the tires to cool and contract for a snug fit before reinstalling the blade.
▸ How long do urethane band saw tires last compared to rubber?
Urethane tires significantly outlast factory rubber tires. Rubber tires dry out, crack, and become brittle over time — even when the saw isn't in use. Urethane resists all of these issues, maintaining its grip and shape for years of regular use.
▸ My band saw model isn't listed. Will these tires still fit?
If your 12" band saw uses wheels that are 7/8" wide, these tires will almost certainly fit. The tire can also be trimmed to fit if needed. Email us or call 888-203-2358 if you'd like us to confirm compatibility for your specific model.
