A 3M timing belt is a curvilinear (HTD) synchronous belt with a 3 mm pitch. It is the smallest standard pitch in the HTD family and is designed for miniature and light-duty drives including small servo motors, office equipment, instruments, vending machines, and small industrial conveyors.
Both have a 3 mm pitch, but they use different tooth profiles. Standard 3M HTD uses a semi-circular tooth. GT3 at 3mm uses a modified curvilinear tooth optimized for precision positioning. At 3mm pitch (unlike 5M, 8M, and 14M), GT3 belts are NOT backward compatible with standard 3M HTD pulleys. You need GT3-specific pulleys. Always verify which pulley type your equipment uses before ordering.
No. MXL has a 2.032 mm pitch with a trapezoidal tooth shape. 3M has a 3 mm pitch with a curvilinear tooth shape. Different pitch, different tooth geometry, different pulleys. These profiles are not interchangeable in any way.
Use 3M when your drive requires compact pulleys (3M minimum pulley is ~12 mm diameter vs. ~22 mm for 5M), when the load is light, or when space is limited. If a 3M belt at 15 mm width does not provide enough torque for your application, step up to 5M rather than overloading the 3M belt.
