GT timing belts are the precision tier of curvilinear synchronous belts. Developed by Gates as an evolution of the standard HTD profile, the GT tooth geometry is optimized for near-zero backlash, more uniform load sharing across meshing teeth, and up to 25% higher load capacity than standard HTD at the same pitch. GT belts are the preferred choice for servo drives, CNC machines, robotics, precision indexing, and any application where positioning accuracy matters.
Texas Belting stocks GT, GT2, and GT3 timing belts from Gates (PowerGrip GT3) and compatible GT-profile belts from Continental and Megadyne. Available in pitches from 2 mm through 14 mm.
GT, GT2, and GT3: Understanding the Generations
The "GT" designation has evolved through multiple generations, each improving on the previous design. All three generations use a curvilinear tooth shape, but the tooth geometry, materials, and performance specifications differ.
GT (First Generation)
The original GT profile introduced by Gates improved on the standard HTD design with a modified curvilinear tooth that reduced backlash and improved tooth engagement. First-generation GT belts used neoprene construction similar to standard HTD belts.
- Available pitches: 3 mm, 5 mm, 8 mm, 14 mm
- Body material: Neoprene
- Status: Largely superseded by GT2 and GT3, but still referenced in some legacy equipment specifications
GT2
GT2 further refined the tooth geometry for better backlash control and more consistent tooth-to-groove fit. The 2 mm pitch GT2 belt became the de facto standard for 3D printer motion systems and small desktop automation, making it one of the most widely recognized timing belt designations in maker and manufacturing communities alike.
- Available pitches: 2 mm, 3 mm, 5 mm, 8 mm
- Body material: Neoprene (standard) or HNBR (premium)
- Key use: 3D printers (2 mm pitch), small servo drives, desktop CNC, robotics, light automation
GT3 (PowerGrip GT3)
PowerGrip GT3 is the current top-tier Gates timing belt product line. It combines the latest optimized tooth geometry with HNBR rubber compound as the standard body material. HNBR provides a wider operating temperature range, better chemical resistance, and longer fatigue life than the neoprene used in standard HTD and earlier GT belts.
- Available pitches: 2 mm, 3 mm, 5 mm, 8 mm, 14 mm
- Body material: HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber)
- Tensile cord: Fiberglass (standard)
- Temperature range: -65°F to +250°F
- Backlash: Near-zero by design
- Load capacity: Up to 25% higher than standard HTD at the same pitch and width
- Best for: Servo drives, CNC machines, precision indexing, robotics, high-accuracy positioning, extended service life, high-temperature environments
GT3 is the recommended specification for all new precision drive designs and is the preferred upgrade path from standard HTD belts when accuracy, noise, or service life improvements are needed.
How to Read a GT3 Timing Belt Part Number
Gates GT3 part numbers use a different format than standard HTD numbers. The pitch designation comes first, which makes them easy to distinguish.
| Part Number | Pitch | Pitch Length | Width |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2MGT-200-06 | 2 mm GT3 | 200 mm | 6 mm |
| 3MGT-357-09 | 3 mm GT3 | 357 mm | 9 mm |
| 5MGT-600-15 | 5 mm GT3 | 600 mm | 15 mm |
| 8MGT-640-36 | 8 mm GT3 | 640 mm | 36 mm |
| 14MGT-1400-68 | 14 mm GT3 | 1400 mm | 68 mm |
Format: [Pitch]MGT-[Pitch Length in mm]-[Width in mm]. The "MGT" designation identifies the belt as a Gates GT3 product. This is the same format used for Poly Chain GT Carbon belts, which share the GT tooth geometry but use polyurethane/carbon fiber construction.

GT3 vs. Standard HTD: Side-by-Side Comparison
This is the most common comparison buyers face when specifying timing belts. Both GT3 and standard HTD are curvilinear profiles available at the same pitches, but they differ in tooth geometry, materials, and performance.
| Characteristic | Standard HTD | GT3 (PowerGrip GT3) |
|---|---|---|
| Tooth geometry | Semi-circular curvilinear | Optimized curvilinear (modified contact angle) |
| Body material | Neoprene (chloroprene rubber) | HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) |
| Temperature range | -30°F to +185°F | -65°F to +250°F |
| Load capacity | Baseline curvilinear | Up to 25% higher at same pitch and width |
| Backlash | Low | Near-zero |
| Noise level | Low (better than trapezoidal) | Lower (optimized engagement reduces impact) |
| Chemical resistance | Moderate (neoprene) | Better (HNBR resists more chemicals) |
| Fatigue life | Good | Longer (HNBR + optimized stress distribution) |
| Cost | Lower | Higher (premium materials and manufacturing) |
| Pulley compatibility | HTD pulleys | PowerGrip GT2 sprockets (recommended). Can run on HTD pulleys in non-critical applications. |
Pulley Compatibility
This is the most frequently asked question about GT belts, and getting it wrong causes problems. Here is the definitive compatibility guidance:
| Belt | On PowerGrip GT2 Sprockets | On Standard HTD Pulleys |
|---|---|---|
| GT3 belt | Optimal. Full performance, near-zero backlash, maximum load capacity. | Acceptable for general industrial use. Increased backlash, reduced precision. Not recommended for servo or positioning applications. |
| Standard HTD belt | Not recommended. HTD tooth does not fully engage GT3 groove geometry. Reduced contact area and premature wear. | Optimal. Designed for each other. |
Bottom line: GT3 belts on PowerGrip GT2 sprockets gives you full performance. GT3 belts on HTD pulleys works for general industrial drives but sacrifices the precision advantages. Standard HTD belts on GT2 sprockets should be avoided. For servo, CNC, and positioning applications, always use matched GT3 belt and pulley sets.
GT2 Belts for 3D Printers and Desktop Automation
The 2 mm pitch GT2 belt has become the industry standard for 3D printer motion systems. Its combination of compact size, low backlash, and precision positioning makes it ideal for the X and Y axes of FDM/FFF printers, laser engravers, and small CNC routers.
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Pitch | 2 mm |
| Common widths | 6 mm (standard), 9 mm (for higher loads or larger machines) |
| Standard materials | Neoprene with fiberglass cord, or polyurethane with steel cord |
| Open-end available | Yes (polyurethane with steel cord, cut to length) |
| Common lengths | Varies by printer model. Open-end belts can be cut to any length. |
For 3D printers, polyurethane GT2 belts with steel cord are preferred over neoprene because the steel cord provides near-zero stretch, which directly improves print accuracy. Texas Belting stocks both neoprene and polyurethane 2 mm GT2 belts, including open-end rolls for custom lengths. See our Urethane Timing Belts page for more on steel cord and open-end options.

Frequently Asked Questions
GT2 and GT3 are successive generations of the Gates GT tooth profile. GT3 (PowerGrip GT3) is the current generation, featuring a further optimized tooth geometry and HNBR rubber compound as the standard body material. HNBR provides a wider temperature range (-65°F to +250°F versus -30°F to +185°F for neoprene GT2), better chemical resistance, and longer fatigue life. For new designs, GT3 is the recommended specification. GT2 remains widely used in the 2 mm pitch for 3D printers and small automation.
GT3 belts can run on standard HTD pulleys for general industrial applications where precision is not critical. The belt will function, but backlash will be higher and the load capacity and positioning advantages of the GT3 design will be reduced. For servo drives, CNC, and precision indexing, always use matched PowerGrip GT2 sprockets with GT3 belts to achieve full performance.
Most FDM/FFF 3D printers use a 2 mm pitch GT2 belt in 6 mm width. For larger printers or machines that need more rigidity, 9 mm wide GT2 belts are available. Polyurethane GT2 belts with steel cord are preferred over neoprene for better print accuracy due to their near-zero stretch. Open-end polyurethane GT2 belts can be cut to any length. Contact Texas Belting with your printer model or required belt length for a recommendation.
For precision applications (servo, CNC, robotics, indexing), GT3 is strongly recommended and the cost premium is easily justified by improved accuracy and longer belt life. For general industrial drives with no precision requirements operating below 185°F, standard HTD is a reliable and more economical choice. GT3 also makes sense when you need the higher temperature rating of the HNBR compound or when you want to extend service intervals to reduce maintenance downtime.
