How is nickel plated chain made?
Manufacturers electroplate a nickel layer (typically 0.0005" to 0.001" thick) over the carbon steel chain after manufacturing. The plating bonds to the chain surface and resists oxidation, providing a barrier between steel and corrosive environment. Plating is applied to side plates, pins, and rollers: the entire chain assembly receives the corrosion-resistant layer.
How long does the nickel plating last?
Plating service life depends entirely on environment. In moderate conditions (washdown, humid air), expect 5-10 years before noticeable plating wear. In aggressive environments (constant water immersion, salt exposure), plating wears through in 6-18 months and underlying carbon steel begins corroding. Inspect plating condition during regular maintenance; replace chain when bare steel becomes visible.
Is nickel plated chain food-safe?
Not for direct food contact applications. While nickel plating itself is inert, manufacturing variations can leave pits or scratches where carbon steel substrate is exposed and could contact food. FDA regulations require all-stainless or food-grade-coated chain for direct food contact. Nickel plated chain is acceptable for adjacent equipment (frames, drives) but not the chain that contacts food directly.
Can nickel plated chain be re-plated when the coating wears?
Technically yes, but rarely economical. Re-plating requires complete chain disassembly, surface preparation, and electroplating, costs typically exceed the price of new chain. The exception is very large or specialty chain where replacement is itself expensive; in that case, re-plating during a planned maintenance window can extend service life.
