What Are Oil, Chemical & Heat Resistant Belts?

Oil, chemical, and heat resistant conveyor belts are engineered for environments where standard SBR rubber compounds would degrade rapidly. MOR (moderate oil resistant) belts use nitrile rubber compounds that resist swelling and deterioration from petroleum-based oils, animal fats, and vegetable oils. SC-MOR (self-extinguishing moderate oil resistant) adds flame retardant properties. SOR (severe oil resistant) belts provide maximum resistance to concentrated petroleum products. Flame resistant belts meet MSHA and other regulatory requirements for underground mining and fire-hazard environments. High heat belts use EPDM, EPM, or silicone compounds rated from 400°F to 700°F for foundry, steel mill, cement, and hot material handling. Texas Belting stocks all configurations custom cut to width.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between MOR, SC-MOR, and SOR?+
MOR (Moderate Oil Resistant) handles intermittent oil exposure. SC-MOR adds self-extinguishing flame resistance to MOR. SOR (Severe Oil Resistant) is for continuous heavy oil exposure. The right choice depends on the concentration and duration of oil contact in your application.
What temperature can high heat belts handle?+
Standard high heat belts rated to 400°F use EPDM or EPM compounds for sustained elevated temperature service. Extreme high heat belts rated to 700°F use specialized silicone or fluorocarbon compounds for foundry, steel mill, and kiln applications.
Are flame resistant belts required for my application?+
MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) requires flame resistant belts in underground mining operations. Many industrial facilities also require FR belts per insurance or safety regulations. FR belts are self-extinguishing — they will not propagate a flame after the ignition source is removed.
Can oil resistant belts also handle heat?+
Some belt specifications combine oil resistance with moderate heat resistance. However, extreme oil resistance (SOR) and extreme heat resistance (700°F) are typically separate compound formulations. Contact Texas Belting for dual-requirement applications.
What about chemical resistance beyond oil?+
Belt compound selection depends on the specific chemicals present. Nitrile resists petroleum oils. Neoprene handles moderate chemicals and weather. EPDM resists water, steam, and many acids. For specific chemical compatibility, contact our engineering team with your chemical exposure details.
How do I select cover thickness for abrasive hot materials?+
Hot abrasive materials like coke, slag, and clinker require thicker top covers (1/4" to 3/8") in heat-resistant compounds. The combination of abrasion and heat accelerates wear — specify the maximum temperature and material characteristics for accurate recommendations.
