Single Strand Roller Chain

Single Strand Roller Chain
Single-strand roller chain is the standard configuration for most industrial chain drives, one row of rollers per chain, matching sprockets with a single tooth row. Single strand offers the lowest cost per foot, simplest sprocket compatibility, and adequate capacity for the majority of industrial applications. Choose single strand for typical conveyor drives, agricultural equipment, and machinery where load is within standard chain capacity.
When To Choose This Configuration
- Standard industrial drives within standard chain working load
- Conveyor systems with moderate continuous loads
- Most agricultural and material handling applications
- Cost-sensitive installations
- Drives where simple sprocket inventory is preferred

When is single strand chain insufficient?
Single strand reaches its capacity limit when the maximum dynamic load exceeds the chain's rated working load. Telltale signs: chain elongation faster than expected (replacement every 6-12 months in moderate-cycle service), broken side plates, or pin fracture. If you're at the strength edge with single strand, upsizing to the next larger pitch is one option; switching to double strand (same pitch) is another.
Can I retrofit double strand chain on a single strand sprocket?
No, double strand chain requires a double strand sprocket (two parallel tooth rows). Retrofitting requires changing both chain and sprockets. Plan upfront whether your design will be single or multi-strand, since converting later is essentially a full drive replacement.
