Neoprene Timing Belts (Rubber / Chloroprene)
Neoprene timing belts are the standard construction for the majority of industrial timing belt applications worldwide. Neoprene (chloroprene rubber) provides a durable, oil-resistant, heat-resistant belt body that delivers reliable service life across a wide range of operating conditions. Neoprene timing belts are reinforced with fiberglass tensile cords and feature a nylon fabric tooth facing that reduces friction between the belt teeth and sprocket grooves.
Neoprene construction is available across the widest range of timing belt profiles, including all ANSI trapezoidal pitches (MXL through XXH), all HTD pitches (3M, 5M, 8M, 14M), GT/GT2/GT3, and T-profile (T5, T10). Neoprene is the default material when no specialty requirement (chemical resistance, food contact, low particulate, open-end) is specified. Texas Belting stocks neoprene timing belts in all major profiles and pitches for same-day shipping from Houston.
Body material: Neoprene (chloroprene rubber)
Tensile cord: Fiberglass (standard); aramid/Kevlar available in some profiles
Tooth facing: Nylon fabric (reduces friction, improves wear life)
Temperature range: -22°F to +185°F (-30°C to +85°C) standard
Profiles available: MXL, XL, L, H, XH, XXH, 3M, 5M, 8M, 14M, GT2, GT3, T5, T10
Format: Closed-loop (endless) only. Neoprene is not available in open-end form.
Neoprene vs. Urethane: When to Use Each
| Factor | Neoprene (Rubber) | Urethane (Polyurethane) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Lower cost per belt (standard material) | Higher cost |
| Availability | Widest range of profiles and sizes in stock | Fewer stock sizes, more made-to-order |
| Oil resistance | Good | Excellent |
| Chemical resistance | Good (general industrial) | Excellent (broader chemical range) |
| Abrasion resistance | Good | Excellent (2 to 3 times neoprene) |
| Particulate generation | Standard (rubber dust normal) | Very low (cleanroom suitable) |
| Food contact (FDA) | Not FDA-compliant | FDA-compliant grades available |
| Temperature range | -22°F to +185°F | -22°F to +176°F (standard) |
| Open-end available | No (closed-loop only) | Yes (standard format for linear motion) |
| Tensile cord | Fiberglass (0.1 to 0.3% elongation) | Steel wire (0.02%) or Kevlar (0.3 to 0.5%) |
| Best for | General industrial, HVAC, standard equipment replacement | Linear motion, food processing, cleanroom, chemical exposure |
Simple rule: If your application is standard industrial with no food contact, chemical exposure, cleanroom, or linear motion requirement, neoprene is the correct and most cost-effective choice. If you need open-end belts, FDA compliance, low particulate, or superior chemical resistance, choose urethane.
Profiles Available in Neoprene
| Profile Family | Pitches Available in Neoprene | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Trapezoidal (ANSI) | MXL, XL, L, H, XH, XXH | All ANSI trapezoidal pitches are standard in neoprene. |
| HTD (curvilinear) | 3M, 5M, 8M, 14M | Neoprene is the standard material for HTD belts. |
| GT / GT2 / GT3 | GT2 (2M, 3M, 5M, 8M), GT3 (3M, 5M, 8M, 14M) | Most GT belts are neoprene. Poly Chain GT Carbon uses urethane. |
| T-Profile (European) | T5, T10 | T-profile also available in urethane. T2.5 primarily urethane. |
| AT-Profile | Not available | AT-profile is polyurethane only. See AT-Profile Timing Belts. |
Neoprene Timing Belt Construction
Body (Neoprene Rubber)
The neoprene body provides the belt's structural shape, including the teeth. Neoprene offers good resistance to oil, ozone, and moderate heat. Standard operating temperature range is -22°F to +185°F (-30°C to +85°C). HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) compounds are available for extended temperature range and chemical resistance on select profiles.
Tensile Cord (Fiberglass)
Fiberglass cord is the standard tensile member in neoprene timing belts. It provides good tensile strength with moderate elongation (0.1 to 0.3%), which is adequate for most rotary drive applications. Fiberglass cord does not corrode and maintains stable properties over the belt's service life. Some specialty neoprene belts use aramid (Kevlar) cord for higher tensile strength.
Tooth Facing (Nylon Fabric)
A woven nylon fabric is bonded to the tooth surface. This facing reduces friction between the belt teeth and sprocket grooves, which reduces wear, lowers operating noise, and improves belt life. The nylon facing is what gives neoprene timing belt teeth their smooth, fabric-textured appearance.
