T-Profile Timing Belts (T2.5, T5, T10)
T-profile timing belts are the European standard metric trapezoidal belt system, developed in Germany and widely used on equipment manufactured across Europe, including German, Italian, Swiss, and Scandinavian OEMs. The T-profile family uses straight-sided trapezoidal teeth at metric pitches and follows DIN/ISO dimensional standards. Three standard pitches cover applications from miniature instruments to heavy industrial drives.
T-profile belts are available in both polyurethane (with steel or Kevlar cord) and neoprene (with fiberglass cord) construction. Polyurethane is the original and most common T-profile material, particularly for linear motion and food-contact applications. T-profile belts are available in closed-loop and open-end (continuous roll) form. Texas Belting stocks T-profile timing belts in all three pitches for same-day shipping from Houston.
Tooth form: Trapezoidal (metric, straight-sided, DIN/ISO standard)
Pitches: T2.5 (2.5mm), T5 (5mm), T10 (10mm)
Origin: European (German DIN standard)
Standard material: Polyurethane with steel cord (primary); neoprene with fiberglass cord (secondary)
Open-end: Available in all three pitches (polyurethane only)
Related family: AT-profile (modified T-profile with wider tooth base for higher loads)
T-Profile Pitch Comparison
The three T-profile pitches cover a wide range of load capacities. Each pitch has a dedicated page with detailed specifications, part number decoders, width guides, and FAQs.
| Profile | Pitch | Pitch (Inches) | Load Class | Common Widths | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| T2.5 | 2.5mm | 0.098" | Very light | 4 to 16mm | European instruments, sensors, small printers, medical devices |
| T5 | 5mm | 0.197" | Light to moderate | 6 to 50mm | European OEM equipment, linear motion, packaging, textile |
| T10 | 10mm | 0.394" | Heavy | 10 to 100mm | Heavy European drives, large gantry systems, heavy textile, automation |
T5 is the most widely used T-profile pitch, covering the broadest range of European OEM equipment and linear motion applications. T10 is the heavy-duty option for large gantry systems and high-torque drives. T2.5 serves miniature precision drives.
T-Profile vs. AT-Profile: Standard vs. Modified
The AT-profile (AT3, AT5, AT8, AT10, AT15, AT20) is a modified version of the T-profile with a wider tooth base and optimized root geometry for higher load capacity. AT-profile belts share the same pitches as T-profile but use different pulleys. Understanding the difference is critical for correct belt selection.
| Factor | T-Profile (Standard) | AT-Profile (Modified) |
|---|---|---|
| Tooth shape | Standard trapezoidal (straight sides) | Modified trapezoidal (wider base, reduced stress) |
| Load capacity | Standard | Higher (improved tooth root strength) |
| Pulleys | T-profile pulleys | AT-profile pulleys (wider grooves) |
| Interchangeable? | NO. Different tooth geometry. Different pulleys. Do not mix. | |
| Pitches available | T2.5, T5, T10 | AT3, AT5, AT8, AT10, AT15, AT20 |
| Materials | Polyurethane (primary), neoprene | Polyurethane only |
| When to choose | Replacing existing T-profile. Standard European OEM. | New designs needing max load. Heavy linear motion. |
T-Profile vs. ANSI Trapezoidal: Two Different Standards
Both the European T-profile and the North American ANSI trapezoidal families use straight-sided trapezoidal teeth, but they follow different dimensional standards and are not interchangeable. Buyers sometimes confuse these two systems because they look similar.
| Factor | T-Profile (European) | ANSI Trapezoidal (North American) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | DIN / ISO (metric) | ANSI / RMA (imperial) |
| Pitches | 2.5mm, 5mm, 10mm | 0.080", 0.200", 3/8", 1/2", 7/8", 1-1/4" |
| Similar pitches | T5 (5mm) | XL (5.08mm / 0.200") |
| Interchangeable? | NO. Different dimensional standards. Different pulleys. Do not mix. | |
| Primary material | Polyurethane (standard) | Neoprene (standard) |
| Common on | European-made equipment | North American-made equipment |
The most common confusion is between T5 (5mm) and XL (5.08mm). These pitches are very close but the tooth profiles are different and they require different pulleys. Always identify the profile from the belt marking or pulley before ordering.
T-Profile Part Number Format
T-profile part numbers follow a simple metric convention: pitch length in millimeters, profile code, hyphen, width in millimeters.
| Example | Profile | Pitch Length | Width | Teeth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200T2.5-6 | T2.5 | 200mm | 6mm | 80 |
| T5-450-16 | T5 | 450mm | 16mm | 90 |
| T10-600-25 | T10 | 600mm | 25mm | 60 |
Some manufacturers reverse the format (for example, 16T5-450 instead of T5-450-16). The pitch length divided by the pitch gives the tooth count: 450 / 5 = 90 teeth. Texas Belting can cross-reference T-profile part numbers from any manufacturer. Call 888-203-2358 or see our Pitch Chart for all format variations.
T-Profile Materials and Construction
Polyurethane (Primary)
Polyurethane with steel wire or Kevlar tensile cord is the original and most common material for T-profile belts. The European T-profile system was designed around polyurethane construction from the start. Polyurethane T-profile belts provide excellent chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, low particulate generation, and FDA food-contact compliance. Available in closed-loop and open-end form. See Urethane Timing Belts for more details.
Neoprene (Secondary)
Neoprene T-profile belts with fiberglass cord and nylon tooth facing are available as a cost-effective alternative, particularly at T5 and T10 pitches. Neoprene T-profile belts are available only in closed-loop form. They are suitable for general industrial applications where polyurethane's chemical resistance and low particulate properties are not required.
Open-End Roll Stock
Polyurethane T-profile belts are available in open-end (continuous roll) form in all three pitches. Open-end T-profile belts are the standard format for linear motion, custom center distance drives, and any application requiring a non-standard belt length. See Open-End Timing Belts.
