Imperial Series Polyurethane Timing Belts

Imperial Series polyurethane timing belts are manufactured to ANSI/RMA standards in MXL, XL, L, H, and XH pitches. They serve as direct, drop-in replacements for standard rubber imperial timing belts, fitting existing pulleys with no modifications while delivering 3 to 5 times longer service life. The polyurethane construction provides superior abrasion resistance, chemical tolerance, and dimensional stability compared to neoprene rubber belts.

Texas Belting stocks polyurethane imperial timing belts alongside our full line of rubber imperial belts from Gates, Continental, and Bando. Whether you need a polyurethane upgrade for longer belt life or a standard rubber replacement, we have both in stock. Polyurethane imperial belts are available in open-ended rolls (sold per foot), welded endless loops, and truly endless molded configurations.

MXL: 0.080" (2.032mm) Pitch

Miniature pitch for small, precise drives and instrumentation. MXL is the smallest imperial profile and is commonly used in medical devices, analytical instruments, and compact servo drives.

Open-Ended 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 Sold per foot
Truly Endless 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 Standard pitch lengths

XL: 1/5" (5.08mm) Pitch

The most widely used imperial timing belt pitch. XL belts serve general-purpose drives in office equipment, medical devices, and light industrial machinery. Texas Belting also stocks standard rubber XL timing belts from Gates and Continental for applications where a rubber belt is preferred.

Configuration Available Widths (inch) Details
Open-Ended 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1 Sold per foot
Welded 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1 Custom endless lengths

L: 3/8" (9.525mm) Pitch

Medium-duty imperial pitch for machine tools, conveyors, and industrial drives. L pitch belts handle higher loads than XL and are the standard choice for mid-range industrial power transmission. Standard rubber L timing belts are also available.

Configuration Available Widths (inch) Details

Truly Endless 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/2, 2 38 to 420 teeth available

H: 1/2" (12.7mm) Pitch

Heavy-duty imperial pitch for high-torque drives, large conveyors, and industrial machinery. H pitch provides significantly more power capacity than L and is used in demanding applications across manufacturing and material handling. Standard rubber H timing belts are also available.

Configuration Available Widths (inch) Details
Open-Ended 3/4, 1, 1-1/2, 2, 3 Sold per foot
Welded 3/4, 1, 1-1/2, 2, 3 Custom endless lengths
Truly Endless 3/4, 1, 1-1/2, 2, 3 Standard pitch lengths available

XH: 7/8" (22.225mm) Pitch

Maximum imperial pitch for the heaviest drives and highest load requirements. XH belts are specified for large industrial machinery, heavy conveying, and high-torque applications where no other imperial pitch provides enough power capacity.

Configuration Available Widths (inch) Details
Open-Ended 1, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 Sold per foot
Welded 1, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 Custom endless lengths

Imperial to Metric Pitch Cross-Reference

Buyers sometimes need to determine whether an imperial or metric belt series is the best fit for a new design, or need to identify the closest metric equivalent when converting from imperial. The table below maps each imperial pitch to its closest metric counterpart.

Imperial Pitch Metric Equivalent Closest Metric Series Notes
MXL (0.080" / 2.032mm) ~2mm T2 Not directly interchangeable; similar application range
XL (1/5" / 5.08mm) ~5mm T5 / AT5 Very close pitch; AT5 is the modern upgrade path
L (3/8" / 9.525mm) ~10mm T10 / AT10 AT10 offers higher power capacity at similar pitch
H (1/2" / 12.7mm) ~12.7mm ATN12.7 ATN12.7 is the only exact 12.7mm metric option
XH (7/8" / 22.225mm) ~20mm AT20 AT20 is the closest metric heavy-duty option
Rubber or polyurethane? Texas Belting stocks both rubber and polyurethane imperial timing belts. Rubber belts from Gates, Continental, and Bando are cost-effective for standard power transmission. Polyurethane belts are the upgrade when you need longer wear life, custom lengths, chemical resistance, FDA-compliant materials, or specialized backings and modifications. Call 888-203-2358 to discuss which option is right for your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Polyurethane MXL, XL, L, H, and XH belts use identical tooth profile dimensions to standard rubber imperial belts per ANSI/RMA standards. They fit directly onto existing pulleys with no modifications, providing an immediate upgrade in belt life and performance. However, polyurethane belts are slightly thinner than rubber belts at the same pitch, so check for adequate tooth engagement on heavily worn pulleys before switching.

Polyurethane imperial belts last 3 to 5 times longer than rubber, resist oils, chemicals, and ozone degradation, maintain tighter dimensional tolerances with steel cord reinforcement, and operate across a wider temperature range (-30°C to +80°C). They also support custom lengths (open-ended and welded), FDA-compliant materials, and specialized backings that are not available in rubber. The higher initial cost is typically recovered multiple times over through reduced downtime and replacement frequency.

Polyurethane imperial timing belts are available in MXL (0.080" pitch), XL (1/5" or 0.200"), L (3/8" or 0.375"), H (1/2" or 0.500"), and XH (7/8" or 0.875"). All five pitches match standard ANSI/RMA tooth profiles and run on standard imperial pulleys.

XL (1/5" pitch) is the most widely used imperial timing belt size for general-purpose power transmission, office equipment, and light industrial drives. L (3/8" pitch) is the second most common, serving medium-duty industrial applications. Both are available in rubber and polyurethane from Texas Belting.

Yes. Truly endless (molded continuous loop, no splice joint) polyurethane belts are available in all five imperial pitches. XL belts are available from 60 to 390 teeth, and L belts from 38 to 420 teeth. Open-ended and welded configurations are also available for custom lengths. Contact Texas Belting at 888-203-2358 for truly endless availability in your required tooth count.

Yes. Open-ended imperial belts are sold by the foot and can be cut to any length. Welded endless belts can be produced at any pitch circumference. These custom length options are a significant advantage of polyurethane over rubber, where only fixed stock sizes are typically available. For field joining methods, see the connecting and joining belts page.

Yes. Imperial pitch belts are available in FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 compliant polyurethane with stainless steel tension members. These belts are suitable for direct food contact and washdown environments. See the food-grade polyurethane timing belts page for details.

For new machine designs, metric AT-Series belts are generally recommended over imperial profiles because the AT curvilinear tooth provides higher power capacity and lower backlash than the imperial trapezoidal tooth. Imperial polyurethane belts are the right choice when replacing rubber belts on existing imperial-profile pulleys, when the equipment specification requires ANSI/RMA profiles, or when compatibility with imperial replacement parts is important.
