Profile Timing Belts for Conveying
Profile Timing Belts for Conveying
Profile belts are polyurethane timing belts with raised attachments (cleats, flights, dividers, fingers, or custom shapes) welded or snapped onto the belt surface for product handling, positioning, and transport. With over 4,000 standard profile designs available, plus custom profile capability, virtually any conveying requirement can be met. Profiles transform a timing belt from a simple power transmission component into a complete synchronized conveying solution.
Texas Belting offers profiled belts on all T-Series, AT-Series, and ATP polyurethane timing belts. For quick-change applications, ATN Convertible belts accept snap-in profiles that can be reconfigured in the field without tools. For food-grade applications, FDA-compliant profiled belts are available with welded food-grade profiles and stainless steel tension members.

Profile Types
ATN Convertible Profiles (Snap-In)
ATN belts accept snap-in profiles that click into the belt without tools. Profiles can be swapped in the field when conveying requirements change, without replacing the belt. Six snap-in profile types are available covering pushing, dividing, guiding, and product-specific holding applications.
Welded Profiles (Permanent)
Thermally welded profiles are permanently bonded to the belt surface using heat and pressure, creating a weld joint as strong as the base belt material. No adhesive is used, making welded profiles hygienic, chemical-resistant, and suitable for washdown environments. Over 4,000 stock designs include straight flights, angled dividers, V-guides, product pushers, finger profiles, and custom shapes.
Standard Profile Shapes
| Profile Shape | Description | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| T-Cleats | T-shaped cross-section | Product pushing, dividing, indexing |
| L-Cleats | L-shaped (right angle) | Product containment, edge guides |
| Finger profiles | Flexible polyurethane fingers | Gentle product separation, accumulation |
| Straight flights | Vertical flat blades | Inclined conveying, bucket elevation |
| V-guides | V-shaped tracking guides | Belt tracking on flat pulleys |
| Custom shapes | CNC-machined to drawing | Application-specific handling, sorting, gripping |
Common Conveying Applications
| Application | Profile Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronous conveying | Evenly spaced flights | Precise product spacing at fixed intervals |
| Product driving | Pusher profiles | Positive engagement to move products along conveyor |
| Cylindrical product handling | V-groove or cradle profiles | Stable transport of bottles, tubes, rolls |
| Feeder lines | Divider profiles | Controlled single-file product feeding |
| Test tube carriers | Precision nesting profiles | Secure transport of lab and medical containers |
| Pick and place | Indexed position profiles | Repeatable product locations for robotic handling |
| Sorting stations | Diverter profiles | Redirect products to different lanes in packaging lines |
Profile Attachment Methods
| Method | Bond Strength | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermal welding | Highest (same as belt body) | No adhesive, hygienic, permanent, FDA-compatible | Requires PU profiles (same material as belt) |
| ATN snap-in | High (mechanical lock) | Field-replaceable without tools, quick reconfiguration | ATN belts only (AT10, AT12.7 pitch) |
| Mechanical fastening | High | Field-replaceable, any profile material | Hardware may contact product, not ideal for food |
| Adhesive bonding | Moderate | Versatile material options | May degrade in chemical or thermal exposure |
Frequently Asked Questions
Profile timing belts have raised features such as cleats, dividers, fingers, or custom shapes attached to the belt surface. These profiles transform a timing belt into a synchronized conveying solution for handling, sorting, or positioning products with precise timing.
The most common method is thermal welding, which creates a bond as strong as the base belt material with no adhesive. ATN Convertible belts accept snap-in profiles for quick field changes. Mechanical fastening and adhesive bonding are also available for specialized requirements.
Yes. Custom profiles can be CNC-machined or molded to match specific product handling requirements. Send Texas Belting a drawing or sample of the product to be conveyed, and we will design a profile shape to suit your application. Call 888-203-2358 to discuss custom profile options.
Profile heights up to approximately 50mm can be thermally welded to standard timing belts. Taller profiles may require mechanical fastening or a wider belt base for stability. The maximum practical height depends on the belt pitch, width, and the dynamic forces the profile will experience during operation.
Yes. CNC welding equipment positions profiles at any spacing pattern: uniform, variable, grouped, or specified by a drawing. This flexibility allows profiles to match specific product sizes, indexing requirements, or irregular container spacing on packaging lines.
Profiles must be designed to clear the pulley teeth during belt wrap. On the tooth (drive) side, profiles pass through gaps between the pulley flanges. Back-side profiles must be positioned to avoid interference with idler rollers. Texas Belting provides design assistance to ensure proper clearance on all pulleys in the drive.
Thermally welded polyurethane profiles share the same temperature limits as the base belt material: -30°C to +80°C standard, or up to +100°C with GEN III compound. The weld joint strength is maintained across the full operating temperature range.
Yes. FDA-compliant profiled belts use food-grade polyurethane for both the belt body and welded profiles, with stainless steel tension members. The welded construction eliminates adhesive and hardware, creating a hygienic design that is easy to clean and meets food safety requirements.
