How To Order Chain: 5-Step Selection Guide

Step 1: Identify Your Pitch

Measure pitch on existing chain (pin-to-pin distance) or check equipment documentation. Pitch is the primary identifier and must match your sprocket exactly. Chain and sprocket pitch are interchangeable across brands, but never substitute different pitches.

Step 2: Determine Reel Length

Calculate total chain length needed and buy at least 6 inches extra for chain stretch and installation slack. Reels come in 5', 10', 50', and 100' lengths.

Step 3: Choose Connection Type

Riveted chain has permanent connections and slightly higher strength: best for high-speed continuous operation. Cottered chain is field-serviceable with hand tools.

Step 4: Add a Connecting Link

Every chain reel needs one connecting link to join the cut ends into a loop after sizing. Three types: Cottered Pin (C/P C/L), Spring Clip (S/C C/L), or Riveted.

Step 5: Add Offset Link If Needed

If your drive geometry requires an odd-pitch chain length, add one offset link (O/L). Avoid using offset links in shock-loaded applications where possible.

Is Lynx chain interchangeable with other brands?

Yes for the inch series (ANSI B29.1) and metric series (BS 228 / ISO 606). Lynx chain in a given size is dimensionally identical to chain from any other compliant manufacturer. You can mix Lynx connecting links with other-brand chain reels and vice versa, provided both follow the same standard. Within a single chain loop, however, we recommend a single brand to minimize tolerance variation.

What chain pitch do I need?

Check the existing chain: most ANSI chain has the pitch number stamped on the outer side plates (40, 60, 80, etc.). If unmarked, measure pin-to-pin distance: this is the pitch. ANSI pitches step in 1/8 inch increments: #25 = 1/4", #40 = 1/2", #80 = 1", and so on. For British Standard chain, the number ends in "B" (04B, 08B, 12B). For double-pitch extended chain, the prefix is "C2": C2040, C2080, etc.

What does the "-2" or "-3" suffix mean on chain sizes?

It indicates strand count. HD80 is single strand, HD80-2 is double strand, HD80-3 is triple strand. All three have the same pitch but progressively more rollers per pitch for higher load capacity. Strand count must match between chain and sprocket: HD80-2 chain requires a double-strand sprocket. Double strand provides 1.7-1.9x single strand capacity; triple strand provides 2.4-2.7x.

How long does industrial chain last?

Service life depends heavily on load, speed, environment, and lubrication. Properly lubricated chain in moderate-duty service typically lasts 15,000-25,000 hours. Heavy-duty service drops this to 5,000-15,000 hours. Replace chain when elongation exceeds 3% of original length, or earlier if visual inspection shows pin scoring, plate cracking, or roller damage. Worn sprockets accelerate chain wear, so replace sprockets at the same time as chain.

Should I choose riveted or cottered chain?

Riveted chain has permanent connections and slightly higher tensile strength. Best for high-speed continuous drives that rarely come off for maintenance. Cottered chain uses cotter pins through drilled holes, making it field-serviceable with hand tools. Choose cottered for maintenance-accessible applications. Both options ship in the same pitches and strengths; the connection method is the main differentiator.

What is the difference between Standard, Heavy, XD, and SH chain?

Standard ANSI chain meets B29.1 minimum dimensions. Heavy series (designation "H", such as 60H or 80H) uses thicker side plates for 20-30% higher tensile strength: still dimensionally compatible with standard sprockets. XD (Extreme Duty) achieves 25-35% higher tensile through shot-peened plates and harder pins, within the same dimensional envelope. SH (Super Heavy) goes furthest with up to 40% higher tensile, available only in pitches #100 and larger. Cost rises with strength: Standard < H < XD < SH.
