V-Belt Sheaves
V-belt sheaves (also called V-belt pulleys) are the grooved wheels that guide and drive V-belts in power transmission systems. The sheave groove profile must match the belt cross section exactly. Using the wrong groove angle or pitch diameter leads to belt slippage, premature wear, and wasted energy. Texas Belting stocks sheaves in three main construction types, each designed for a different duty level and mounting method.
Sheave Types at a Glance
| Type | Mounting & Duty | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| QD Sheaves | Quick Disconnect bushing (removable). Medium to heavy industrial duty. 1 to 12+ grooves. | HVAC, pumps, compressors, conveyors, fans, industrial drives |
| Bored-to-Size (BTS) Sheaves | Set screw on fixed bore. Light to medium duty. 1 to 4 grooves. | Fans, blowers, small pumps, light OEM equipment |
| Adjustable Speed Sheaves | QD bushing or BTS (varies). Variable speed. 1 to 2 grooves (adjustable pitch). | Fans, HVAC air handlers, machines needing speed tuning without a VFD |
Sheave groove profiles are standardized to match V-belt cross sections. Classical sections (A, B, C, D, E) use a different groove angle and depth than narrow wedge sections (3V, 5V, 8V). Always match the sheave groove to the belt section. For help sizing or cross-referencing sheaves, contact our team or call 888-203-2358.
Timing Belt Sprockets
Timing belt sprockets (also called timing pulleys) have precisely machined teeth that mesh with the teeth on a timing belt. This positive engagement eliminates slip and provides exact speed ratios, making timing belt drives the preferred choice for indexing, positioning, conveyors, packaging, printing, and any application where precise motion control matters.
The sprocket tooth profile must match the belt tooth profile exactly. An HTD belt requires an HTD sprocket. A GT3 or GT4 belt requires a Gates PowerGrip GT2 sprocket, the only GT sprocket Gates makes. Mixing profiles causes tooth shear, noise, premature failure, and loss of positional accuracy. Texas Belting stocks sprockets in every profile family we carry belts for, so you can get matched belt-and-sprocket sets from a single source.
Sprocket Profiles at a Glance
| Profile | Pitches & Tooth Form | Applications & Matching Belts |
|---|---|---|
| HTD Sprockets | 3M, 5M, 8M, 14M. Curvilinear (round) tooth. | General industrial, conveyors, packaging, pumps. Matches HTD belts. |
| PowerGrip GT2 Sprockets | 2M, 3M, 5M, 8M, 14M. Modified curvilinear (Gates) tooth. Runs GT2, GT3 and GT4 belts. | High-torque drives, servo motors, precision positioning. Matches GT belts. |
| Trapezoidal Pulleys | XL, L, H. Trapezoidal (angled) tooth. | Instrumentation, office machines, light industrial, OEM. Matches XL, L, H belts. |
| Poly Chain GT Sprockets | 8M, 14M. Modified curvilinear (Gates) tooth. | High-HP drives replacing roller chain, heavy conveyors, mining. Matches Poly Chain belts. |
QD & Taper Lock Bushings
Bushings are the interface between the shaft and the sheave or sprocket. They lock the drive component to the shaft and transmit torque. The two dominant bushing systems in industrial power transmission are Quick Disconnect (QD) and Taper Lock, each with its own bore range, installation method, and application strengths.
Bushing Types Compared
| Feature | QD Bushings | Taper Lock Bushings |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting | Bolts pull bushing into tapered hub bore | Bolts compress split bushing onto shaft |
| Removal | Reverse bolts to push bushing out (no pullers needed) | Bolts thread into extraction holes to push bushing free |
| Bore Range | 3/8" to 12"+ (English); metric available | 1/2" to 5"+ (English); metric available |
| Standard | Dominant in North America | Dominant in Europe; growing North American use |
| Best For | Frequent maintenance, HVAC, general industrial | High torque, tight tolerance, food/pharma (stainless options) |
Not sure which bushing system your equipment uses? Check the existing sheave or sprocket hub. QD-mount components have a flange face with bolt holes arranged around a tapered bore. Taper Lock components have a split hub with a visible slit and compression bolts. Our Bushing Selection Guide walks through identification, sizing, and bore selection step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a sheave and a pulley?
In industrial power transmission, the terms are often used interchangeably. Technically, a sheave refers to the grooved wheel that carries a V-belt, while a pulley is the broader term for any wheel used in a belt or rope drive. Timing belt wheels are typically called sprockets or timing pulleys rather than sheaves, because their teeth mesh with the belt instead of relying on friction.
How do I know which sheave groove matches my V-belt?
Match the sheave groove profile to the belt cross section. A-section belts require A-groove sheaves, B-section belts require B-groove sheaves, and so on. Narrow wedge belts (3V, 5V, 8V) use their own dedicated groove profiles that differ from classical grooves. The groove angle and depth are different between classical and narrow wedge sections. Check the belt marking or measure the belt width and height to identify the section, then select a sheave with the corresponding groove. Our Sheave Selection Guide covers this in detail.
Can I use an HTD sprocket with a GT timing belt?
No. Even when the pitch (for example, 8mm) is the same, HTD and GT tooth profiles are shaped differently. HTD teeth are fully semicircular, while GT teeth have a modified curvilinear shape that distributes load differently across the tooth face. Running a GT belt on an HTD sprocket (or vice versa) causes accelerated tooth wear, increased noise, and eventually tooth shear and drive failure. Always match the exact profile: HTD belts on HTD sprockets, GT3 and GT4 belts on PowerGrip GT2 sprockets. See our Tooth Profiles guide for a visual comparison.
What is a QD bushing and why is it better than a fixed bore?
A Quick Disconnect (QD) bushing is a tapered, split hub that locks a sheave or sprocket onto a shaft using cap screws. The key advantage is maintenance speed: you can remove and install the bushing without pulling the sheave off the shaft first. For replacement jobs, this can save 30 minutes or more per drive. QD bushings also allow one sheave to fit multiple shaft sizes by simply swapping the bushing. This reduces spare parts inventory. Our Bushing Selection Guide explains QD sizing, installation, and torque specs.
What is the difference between a QD bushing and a Taper Lock bushing?
Both are tapered-bore systems, but they use different mounting methods and standards. QD bushings pull into the hub bore with bolts and push out in reverse for removal. Taper Lock bushings compress onto the shaft using a split design and separate extraction holes. QD is the dominant standard in North America. Taper Lock originated in Europe and is more common in metric shaft applications. Both systems are available in English and metric bores. See our Bushing Selection Guide for a full comparison.
Can Texas Belting cross-reference sheave and sprocket part numbers?
Yes. We cross-reference between Gates, Continental (Blackhawk), Browning, Martin, and other manufacturers. Send us the part number from your existing component and we will confirm the equivalent in stock. You can submit a part number here or call 888-203-2358.
Do you sell belt and sprocket kits together?
We can put together matched belt-and-sprocket sets for any timing belt drive. Tell us the belt profile, pitch, number of teeth, width, and required shaft bore sizes, and we will quote a complete drive package including belt, sprockets, and bushings. This is especially useful for new equipment builds or full drive replacements. Request a drive package quote.
What sheaves and sprockets does Texas Belting stock?
We stock QD sheaves, bored-to-size sheaves, and adjustable speed sheaves for all classical (A through E) and narrow wedge (3V, 5V, 8V) V-belt sections. For timing belts, we carry HTD sprockets (3M, 5M, 8M, 14M), PowerGrip GT2 sprockets, trapezoidal pulleys (XL, L, H), and Poly Chain GT Carbon sprockets. We also stock QD bushings and Taper Lock bushings in English and metric bores, including stainless steel Taper Lock for food and pharmaceutical applications.
