Double Strand Roller Chain
Double-strand chain provides approximately 1.7-1.9× the load capacity of single-strand chain of the same pitch: two parallel rows of rollers connected by longer pins, mating with a double-strand sprocket. Useful when you need more capacity than single-strand provides but don't want to upsize to the next larger pitch (which would require larger sprockets, longer shafts, and more powerful drives). Designated with "-2" suffix (e.g., HD80-2, HD100-2).
When To Choose This Configuration
- Loads exceeding single-strand chain capacity at same pitch
- Compact drive geometry where larger pitch won't fit
- Critical equipment where chain redundancy is valuable
- Speed reduction drives where torque is higher than single-strand can handle
- Heavy industrial conveyors and palletizers

Why isn't double strand exactly 2× the capacity of single strand?
Manufacturing tolerances mean the two strands don't share load perfectly equally, one strand inevitably carries slightly more load than the other. Rating standards account for this by derating multi-strand chain: double strand is typically 1.7-1.9× single strand, triple strand is typically 2.4-2.7× single strand. Tighter manufacturing tolerances improve sharing, which is why premium chain (XD, SH) approaches the theoretical multiplier.
Can I use a single-strand connecting link on double-strand chain?
No, double-strand chain requires double-strand connecting links and offset links. The pin geometry (length and configuration) is specific to the strand count. Trying to use single-strand components on multi-strand chain results in immediate failure during installation or shortly after starting the drive.
