Conveyor Belt Construction Quick Guide

Conveyor belts are defined by their cover type (what the top and bottom surfaces look like) and their carcass (the internal reinforcement layers). Understanding these terms helps you specify the right belt.

Cover Types

Abbreviation Meaning Description
COS Cover One Side Smooth cover on top, bare fabric bottom. The most common type. Good for slider bed conveyors.
CBS Cover Both Sides Smooth cover on top and bottom. Required for live roller conveyors and bucket elevator applications.
FBS Friction Both Sides Fabric texture on both sides (no smooth cover). Designed for slider bed conveyors. Lower friction on the bed surface.
Rough Top Textured top surface Raised texture for grip on incline/decline conveyors. Available in rubber and PVC. Various patterns.

Common Carcass Types

Carcass Description Best For
2-Ply Polyester Two layers of polyester fabric. Standard for light to medium duty. General purpose, package handling, light manufacturing
3-Ply Polyester Three layers. Higher tensile strength than 2-ply. Medium to heavy duty, longer conveyors, heavier loads
Straight Warp Single-ply with straight-running warp yarns. Low stretch, high troughing ability. Bulk material, mining, aggregate, long-distance conveying
Monofilament Thin, cross-rigid carcass. Low moisture absorption. Food processing, wet environments, small pulleys, lightweight conveying
Nylon/Polyester (EP) Polyester warp, nylon weft. High impact and fatigue resistance. Heavy duty, mining, high-impact loading zones
Not sure what construction you need? Tell us what you are conveying, the conveyor length and width, whether it is a slider bed or live roller, the incline angle (if any), and any special requirements (FDA, heat, oil, anti-static). We will recommend the correct belt construction. Call 888-203-2358.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of conveyor belts does Texas Belting carry?

We carry general purpose rubber and PVC, heavy-duty multi-ply rubber, FDA food grade, incline/decline (rough top, chevron, cleated, sidewall), urethane, modular plastic, elevator (PVC and rubber CBS), interwoven PVC, air slide, folder gluer and machine tape, PTFE/silicone, and custom fabricated belts. If it is a conveyor belt, we stock it or can source it.

How do I know which conveyor belt I need?

The correct belt depends on what you are conveying (material type, weight, temperature), your conveyor configuration (slider bed or live roller, flat or inclined, belt width and length), and any regulatory requirements (FDA, anti-static, fire resistant). The simplest approach is to tell us your application and conveyor specs, and we will recommend the right belt. If replacing an existing belt, send us a photo or piece of the old belt.

What is the difference between COS, CBS, and FBS?

COS (Cover One Side) has a smooth cover on top and bare fabric on the bottom. It is the most common type for slider bed conveyors. CBS (Cover Both Sides) has smooth covers on top and bottom and is required for live roller conveyors and bucket elevators. FBS (Friction Both Sides) has fabric texture on both sides with no smooth cover, designed for slider beds where lower bed friction is needed.

Do you carry FDA food grade conveyor belts?

Yes. We carry a full range of FDA-approved conveyor belts in PVC, urethane, nitrile (RAV), modular plastic, and PTFE/silicone for meat, poultry, bakery, produce, dairy, confectionery, and pharmaceutical applications. Detectable belting is also available for HACCP-compliant facilities.

Can you make a custom conveyor belt for my system?

Yes. We fabricate conveyor belts at our Houston facility. Services include cut to length, finger splice, overlap splice, mechanical lacing, endless belt fabrication, bolt-hole punching for elevator belts, custom cleat and sidewall attachment, and pulley lagging. Send us your conveyor dimensions and requirements for a quote.

What conveyor belt do I need for an incline?

It depends on the incline angle. For 10 to 20 degrees, rough top or impression top belts work well. For 20 to 35 degrees, diamond top/wedgegrip or steepgrade belts. For 35+ degrees, cleated or sidewall belts are required. See our Incline/Decline Belting page for a complete angle-to-belt guide.

How quickly can you quote and ship a conveyor belt?

Quotes are typically returned within the hour during business hours. Stocked belts cut to length ship same day or next day depending on fabrication requirements. Custom cleated, sidewall, and endless belts typically ship within 2 to 5 business days depending on complexity. Emergency expediting is available. Call 888-203-2358.

Do you also carry V-belts and timing belts?

Yes. Texas Belting is a full-service industrial belting supplier. In addition to conveyor belts, we carry V-belts (classical, cogged, narrow wedge, banded, FHP) and timing belts (HTD, GT, trapezoidal, urethane, open-end) from Gates, Continental, Bando, Megadyne, and Diesel Belting.
