Foundry & Steel Conveyor Belts

Conveyor belts for foundries, steel mills, smelters, forges, and metalcasting operations handling hot castings, slag, scale, quenched parts, and abrasive bulk materials at extreme temperatures. Texas Belting stocks high-heat EPDM and EPM belts rated to 700°F, hot stock and water belts, oil-resistant MOR rubber, and heavy-duty multi-ply constructions built to survive the most punishing environments in heavy industry. In stock and shipping from Houston, TX.

Foundry and steel mill conveyor belt handling hot castings

Conveyor Belts for the Foundry & Steel Conveyor Belts Industry

Foundry and steel mill conveyor belts operate in conditions that would destroy standard belting within hours — temperatures exceeding 700°F from hot castings and molten slag, abrasive scale and shot blast media that grinds through covers, quench water and cooling fluids that cause swelling in non-resistant compounds, and impact loading from heavy castings and scrap metal drops. Belt selection in these environments is not about cost per foot — it is about total cost of ownership driven by service life, unplanned downtime, and production continuity.

Texas Belting engineers belt solutions for every foundry and steel mill conveyor application. We match the right compound (EPDM for heat, nitrile for oil, SBR for abrasion), carcass construction (multi-ply polyester, straight warp, or solid woven), and cover thickness to the specific temperature, material, and duty cycle of each conveyor. Our high-heat belts, hot stock and water belts, and heavy-duty rubber constructions are stocked for immediate fabrication — because in a steel mill, every hour of downtime costs thousands.

Foundry & Steel Conveyor Belts Conveyor Applications

We supply belting for every stage of production and material handling.

Hot Castings & Forgings

Conveying castings, forgings, and hot billets immediately after pouring, forging, or heat treatment. Material temperatures range from 300°F to over 1000°F at the belt surface, requiring specialized heat-resistant compounds.

Recommended: High heat 400°F–700°F EPDM, silicone cover belts

Quench Tank & Water Cooling

Transporting parts through quench tanks and water baths where belts are continuously submerged. Standard rubber absorbs water and fails rapidly — specialized hot stock compounds resist swelling.

Recommended: Hot stock & water belts (standard, silicone, urethane top)

Shot Blast & Scale Removal

Conveying parts through shot blast cabinets. Steel shot, grit, and loose scale are intensely abrasive — belts need maximum abrasion resistance and thick top covers.

Recommended: Heavy-duty grade 2 rubber, urethane belts

Slag, Dross & Scrap Handling

Moving slag, dross, grinding swarf, and metal scrap from furnaces and machining operations. Materials are hot, abrasive, and often oily.

Recommended: MOR oil-resistant rubber, flame-resistant SC-MOR

Sand Handling & Mold Lines

Conveying green sand, resin sand, cores, and mold components in foundry sand systems at moderate temperatures with binder chemical exposure. Air slide fabric is used for pneumatic conveying of powdered materials like cement, alumina, fly ash, and soda ash in gravity-fed aeration systems.

Recommended: Grade 2 rubber, incline roughtop, air slide fabric

Bucket Elevators

Elevating hot castings, sand, scale, and bulk materials vertically. Must handle both loaded bucket weight and thermal stress, plus provide reliable bolt-hole retention.

Recommended: Rubber elevator belts (2–5 ply, 220–550 PIW)

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature can conveyor belts handle?+
Standard SBR handles about 200°F. EPDM high-heat belts are rated to 400°F sustained and 700°F intermittent. Silicone extends the range further. The key factor is whether heat is sustained or intermittent.
What is a hot stock and water belt?+
Designed for steel mills where belts face both hot material and quench water. Standard rubber absorbs water and fails — hot stock compounds resist swelling. Available with standard rubber, silicone, or urethane top covers.
How do I reduce belt wear from abrasive scale?+
Use thicker top covers (3/8" minimum), choose urethane for maximum life or SBR for cost/performance balance, and ensure conveyor design minimizes impact loading at transfer points.
Are flame-resistant belts required in steel mills?+
While not universally required, SC (self-extinguishing) belts are recommended where hot material, sparks, or molten metal could contact the belt. SC-MOR combines flame and oil resistance.
What PIW rating do I need?+
Short conveyors: 2-ply 220 PIW. Longer sand systems: 3-ply 330 PIW. Bucket elevators: 220–550 PIW depending on bucket size. Our engineers can calculate the right spec.
Can you fabricate elevator belts with bolt holes?+
Yes. We fabricate elevator belts with pre-punched bolt holes in standard and custom patterns. Provide your bucket spacing, bolt pattern, and elevator dimensions.
